Unraid cache issues

Featured Replies

So I've been having an issue with transfering files to my unraid share, The transfer will start out at about 150-200mb/s but after transfering about 2-3GB it'll slow all the way down to about 20-50mb/s. There is plently of space on that cache drive (+120GB). Am I missing something obvious here, or is something not working right? This is transfering stuff from a VM to one of the shares, but I have tried transfering files from my desktop to my server ans the same thing happens.

Go to Tools-diagnostics and attach the complete Diagnostics zip file to your NEXT post

Fist couple of GBs are cached to RAM, hence the high speed, after that you're limited by the actual device speed, what SSD are you using? Very few SSDs can sustain 500MB/s writes unlike what some think, also make sure it's being regularly trimmed.

Until we see diagnostics no reason to assume the destination share is even cached. And the screenshot looks like a round trip over the network thru his PC.

Diagnostics attached, ssd's are set to trim everyday.

I have 2 ssd's being used as the pool (2x120gb) and on both I have seen speeds averaging 150mb/s whilst I was still using windows 10.

From your screenshot, I assumed you were transferring data from the Downloads share to the TV Shows share. But your diagnostics says you don't have any shares by either name.

What are the paths of your source and destination?

  • Community Expert

Unrelated, but your system share has files on the array.

  • Author

Source path is the downloads folder in the windows 10 VM

Destinatin path is a folder in the Media share

Your Media share is cache-yes. However, there are currently no files for that share on cache. Did you change it to cache-yes after that transfer speed test? Or did mover run since that transfer speed test?

The share has always been cache-yes, The mover has run since that screenshot, took it last night and mover ran at midnight.

This is a TLC based SSD, and while 25/50MB/s is on the slow side I'd be surprised if you got more than 80MB/s sustained writes to that SSD, if you want more speed look for a 3D TLC based SSD, e.g. 860EVO, MX500, WD  Blue 3D, etc.
