Failure trying to upgrade parity disk

Recommended Posts

******UPDATE*****

Problem solved by moving the 8TB disk to the Marvell controller, great stable connection and no need for new power supply. Decent parity rebuild times also @ ~180M

Thanks for the input and help guys.B/s.

I am trying to extend my unraid array by adding a few new 8TB drives, they are shucked WD My books (Model family:WDC HGST Ultrastar He10, Device model:WDC WD80EZAZ-11TDBA0)

Partity rebuild fails on either one I try to use about 1.5% into the rebuild. Read errors it seems? maxes out the read error's in the GUI. I have attached the syslog file, hoping someone can point me in the right direction, currently trying to rebuild parity with my original 4TB HGST drive.(hoping that it goes through)

Unraid V6.8.3

Gigabyte F2A85XM-HD3

AMD A10-5800K

8GB Ram

IOCrest SI-PEX40064(Marvell 88SE9215) <-- only 1 SSD connected to it

500W PSU

Total of 7 Sata Hard drives and 2 SSD.

Loos more like a controller/connection issue, if you haven't yet replace both cables (power + SATA), if still the same and although Marvell controllers are not recommended try connecting the new disk there, to see if it's the same thing

I have replaced cables, going to try a new power supply in a few days but not sure that will make a difference as they power up just fine. Any other ideas why they would just go wonky like that after a couple hundred GB written in parity? and both around the same time. I will try and connect them to the Marvell see if it makes a difference .

Until then i have started a pre-clear on it and funny thin is it has been running fine on the pre-read stage, 1.5hrs, 8% done.. was crashing at 15 mins when trying to add it as parity drive. still had quite a bit of "hard resetting link" in the logs for that drive for the first hour, but none in the past hour, maybe a power issue? when the system is under heavy load i got power fluctuation issues?

The other drive that is just sitting there doing nothing also has same issues, its connected but not added to the array or anything else, Soft resets then sometimes negotiates at 6Gbps, others 3.0 or 1.5... they are plugged in the built in sata on the mobo, where i had the ssd's before. there is a total of 8 onboard sata.. maybe the extra load of having them all populated now is an issue? but i do not get any errors at all on the 6 other sata ports where my 4TB and 1 ssd are plugged in.. no resets. only on these new 8TB WD drives. I will prob try and connect them to the PCI sata card i got but i only got a 1X since i was only going to use it for 1 SSD.. won't have enough bandwidth to support 2 Harddrives at PCIEv2.

Any ideas why the drives would stop throwing errors about 1 hour into the test? there have been 0 drive errors since about an hour in?

nothing has changed on the array, load has be low and high at times and still no more errors? have not touched a thing.

Suggest you try rebuild in safe mode.

Thanks for taking the time.

How does that differ from normal if i may ask? what kind of functionality would i lose during the rebuild, i restarted the pre clear and since they have both connected at 1.5Gbps they seem to be working normally, is there a way to limit the connection speed somehow(hard code)?

The logs had some errors before of "limiting SATA link speed to 3.0 Gbps, then more errors then limiting SATA link speed to 1.5 Gbps.. then no more errors?.

Seems only old model support setting to 1.5Gbps by jumper, btw, I don't think those was a correct direction.

Longtime ago, I need set my WD drive to 1.5Gbps when it connect thr a USB-SATA bridge to avoid the bridge reset itself. ( those are 2TB disk and problem not on disk )

that could be my issue ( USB-SATA bridge) but I cannot find any info about the mobo and what type of SATA controller it has. it is an old motherboard (2012)

Newer WD disk shouldn't have this feature, pls forget it. And my case just for that bridge, I got another bridge later and no problem again.

Your MB chipset was A85, 8 port SATA chipset.

Ok well then I am back to having zero idea why they seem to run fine atm @ 1.5Gbps, as soon as i reboot or stop start the array i am sure they will renegotiate and get screwy on me again, i have a new power supply coming in tomorrow so I will re-wire it all and try again, if it still gives me issues will try the Marvell Sata card i have to see if it handles it better.. just seems odd is all. currently zeroing out both drives @ 130+MBps and no errors yet. So strange..

So like @johnnie.black reply, I vote its controller side problem, just try to found a way to bypass the problem.

Agree, problem so strange.
