Dead Mobo + Dead USB

Featured Replies

well, this is what happened

one day the server wouldnt boot anymore. leds on the mobo were on, but no booting, no fans starting, checked all cables, connections, power supply, etc. ... well the mobo is dead

after purchasing a new mobo, couldn't get the usb to boot ... at one point in time, i put the usb in the front slot of my norco 4220 case ... when i pulled it out i noticed it was really hot  ... i'm thinking i inserted it wrong, because now the thing doesnt work ... tried it in a couple other machines, never work ... well the usb is dead.

now, this is what i think i have to do

- ask tom politely for a replacement license, if that's not possible, i will buy a new one

- once in possession of a license, re-assign drives to their expected slot in the array, including parity (i kept that information, but no usb backup, my bad)

- all should work as before

is that the way i should go about it ?

i love unraid, i've had a peace of mind during all this time, knowing my data is just a couple of minutes from being readable in another machine

thanks a lot in advance.

It sounds like you have the right idea.

The only thing I'd worry about is if the power supply caused the damage to BOTH the motherboard AND the USB drive.

If so, I'd be really careful in using it until you've had it tested.

thanks Joe L.

i'm at a point right now where i brought the server up and have all disks showing up with a blue dot.

the Start button is available and the message is

"Start will record all disk information, bring the array on-line, and start Parity-Sync (if parity is present). The array is immediately available, but is unprotected until Parity-Sync completes."

it sounds fine to me ... just double checking that it's ok to push start :)

As long as the parity drive is assigned the parity slot, and the data drives to data slots, you'll be fine.

success !!

i pushed the start button and left it parity sync-ing overnight ...

it reported no errors and i'm currently able to access all my files just as before (had to rebuild my user shares, since all configuration was lost).

can't be more satisfied with a software that is guarding most of my precious data.

btw ... i will replace my power supply (corsair 750hx) with a corsair 850hx ... just for peace of mind. chose the 850hx, because it has 12 molex connectors, so i can run two separate power lines to the norco 4220 backplane connectors.

success !!

That is great news.

Yes indeed.  Try swapping out a motherboard on ANY windows OS, and it would be a lot more challenging. ;)
