Unraid crashes when GPU is passed through

This used to work, and now when starting any VM with my RTX 2070 passed through it crashes the system. Any VM starts up fine with the VNC graphics card but as soon as the GPU is passed through when "start" is clicked the icon rotates and eventually the system becomes unresponsive. From the console (before becoming unresponsive) virsh list never returns. This happens with both Q35-4.2 and i440fx-4.1. I've tested this on 6.8.1, 6.8.2 and 6.8.3.

 

I have set PCIe ACS override to "Multi-Function", verified that the GPU is on it's own IOMMU group so I'm running out of avenues to try.

Added system devices

The RTX 2070 has 4 devices (2d:00.0 - 3). You need to pass through all 4 (preferably with matching xml function) together for it to have any chance of working. Your current config only passes through function 0 and 1. You missed the 2 USB devices (function 2 and 3).

What's the XML look like for that? The GUI doesn't show those other devices.

Also, is there a way to turn up the logging to debug or trace? It's really bothering me that there aren't any obvious logs or errors to tell me what's going on.

With your xml configured correctly you may not need the ACS override turned on. I have mine turned off and am passing a 2070 super to my vm.

You'll need to create these host dev sections for all 4 of the devices on your card, If you notice my slot values don't go in order,  0x06,0x08,0x09,0x0a Something else in my xml was already using 0x07, so just make sure when you populate those values you don't repeat one that already assigned.

Based on your outputs above it looks like these are the 4 device you want to pass through:

So turning off ACS override suddenly made the USB and serial devices show up under "other PCI devices" in the VM template, so that's a decent sign. But as soon as I hit "start" the rotating arrow icon starts animating but the menu under the VM icon never updates to the running mode, it still shows start.

 

Then if I refresh the VM tab it's unresponsive. If i try and refresh, the system log eventually has this error:

Trying to stop libvirtd from the CLI never returns:

And trying to do a clean reboot seems to not be possible either...

Does the vm produce any logs while it is in that rotating state?

Where would the logs be?

When you click the vm icon you should see a menu, once you've clicked to start the vm, open that menu again and you should see an option to view logs.

You probably are using VFIO-PCI.CFG file to stub devices. It will automatically stub all devices in the same IOMMU group so if you tick the GPU, without ACS Override, all devices in the same group will be stubbed together. That's why they start to show up in Other PCI Devices.

Btw, ACS Override on its own has nothing to do with your issue.

 

Try removing the onboard audio (2f:00.4).

There have been reports of unsuccessful attempts with passing through onboard audio lately.

 

Also how did you get your vbios? Are you 100% sure it's the right one.

You seem to have a Quadro (P400?) in your system so I assume that's what Unraid boot with, isn't it?

If that's the case, remove the vbios and try again. Wrong vbios is worse than no vbios.

Since Unraid doesn't boot with the RTX, it shouldn't have been initiated and thus there's no need for a vbios to reset it.

Failing that (assuming all 4 devices are passed through), dump your own vbios.

 

And copy-paste your latest xml on here so everyone is on the same page.

Unraid boots with the 2070, not the Quadro, is that a problem? I can try removing the vbios.

OK, progress. Removed the vbios, and when clicking start it actually returns with a "started" status. I'm able to click through and see the logs, but the display doesn't show anything :(

I ended up swapping the P400 quadro and the RTX 2070 slots, so the quadro is the boot GPU, which seems to have helped. I was able to boot my windows and linux VMs. Thanks all!
