ANOTHER UnRaid build with questions

Featured Replies

Looking to set up an UnRaid server and wanted thoughts before I order parts.

First a little background.

Right now I am running a HP Mediasmart server with 4 1TB HD's feeding to various XBMC units around my house. I have many DVD's ripped to the unit along with my music and photos I access on any tv in any room.

The issue is that I feel fairly safe with my photos and music because I keep a copy on my home pc and a copy on my server. (photography is a big hobby of mine) Not perfect solution but gives me some peace of mind.

But I have no back-up of my ripped movies and with 1:1 duplication in the WHS I would be running out of room quick.

My goals for a new build are low power, expandable, reasonable price, reasonably quiet/cool, fairly compact, some protection against a hard drive failure.

All that out of the way my planned build:

Rosewill ATX mid tower case. 9 Total drive bays, toolless, 2 120mm fans.

ASUS motherboard. 6 Sata ports, known to work with UnRaid, accepts RAM I have sitting around.

AMD Sempron CPU. Low power (45watt), recommended on UnRaid boards.

Already have RAM and a good power supply, and need to get a 2gb or so usb key. Also need the unraid license.

Any thoughts or suggestions before I buy?

FYI:  your links are broken.  Sorry only comment I have.

Thanks....fixed the first post. Decided to change the build up and go with a rack mount.

Does this look ok?

Haha...yep.

Dont want to order parts and then find out there was a better way to do what I wanted.

That rackmount case will limit you to a total of 12 drives, assuming you get a 5 in 3 backplane. Is there any particular reason you want to go rackmount? By the time you do, total cost will be nearly $200. You could get the same number of drives by going with a mid-tower with 9 half height bays and three CoolerMaster 4 in 3 cages. You'd lose hot swap capability, but with your configuration you'd only have it on 5 drives out of 12 anyway. Total cost for a mid-tower and 3 cages is around $120-130. Otherwise, it looks fine to me.

What power supply do you have?
