how long should a parity sync take?

Featured Replies

recently i had been having some issues with my array - a couple of failed drives.  so after some playing around i was able to copy most of the data off od those drives onto other drives.  then i shut down, pulled the 2 bad drives out of the server, and rebooted.

then i stopped the array and unassigned the 2 drives (disk 1 and 3) and clicked "restore" button to reset the array configuration and then started a parity sync.

currently the data on the remainign drives is all god and the parity sync is running but it has been running for about 14 hours now and is at about 14.5%.  is that normal - should it take that long?

i currently have 7 remainign drives totaling about 2.1 terabytes.

Few things to remember here:

1> Paraty Sync will only be as fast as your slowest drive: So if you have an 80G PATA drive from '92, your first 80G of paraty sync will be slower then dirt.

2> Paraty Sync will speed up once smaller slow drives are finished: In the above example, once the sync got to the 81stG, if the rest of your drives are faster then it will speed up dramatically.

3> Check you speed: Time to finish is highly variable based on a number of factors, it's more easy for people to judge if your system is working well if you post the full output of the status.  That way we can see the MB/sec etc.

If 1 and 2 do not apply to you, then hit us up with the status as in #3 so we can take a gander and see about advice :).

speed right now says 2026 KB/sec.  says estimated finish is 3328.7 minutes.

i do have some older PATA drives in there - an 80GB  a 160GB and a 300.  so that could be part of it.

if youthink it sound feasible that it coudl take that long then its fine but i just dont want to let it run for 3 days if there is something wrong that is makign it go so slow.

Older PATA = PITA.  80GB drives were pretty slow and 2MB/sec is probably not unusual.

If you post your syslog we can tell you exactly what is going on.
