How can I check the contents of a HDD before I clear it and add it to the array?

I found an old HDD. I am not sure if it is blank or not. Before I clear, I would like to confirm that is empty or that I don't want its contents.

I tried to use UNASSIGNED DEVICES but it only offered to allow me to format the drive. (see the attached image)

The HDD could have been used in a linux or Windows machine or not at all.

Does the fact that Unassigned Devices sees the drive as unformated, suggest that it has never been used? Or only that it is not recognizing the file system (if there is a file system)?

    Disk doesn't have any partitions, so no data.
