Server IP address..... Fixed at the device or permanent lease from the router?

Featured Replies

Hi,

My system is gradually evolving.......... Two servers and a W10 workstation being the principle components agmonst the rest of the house stuff,  all attached via three subnets to a pfsense router working as a VM off one of the servers....

Every device in the house has been assigned a permanent lease by pfsense. (One reason is to deny access to any device I don't know about...)

My question is relevant to every device I suppose, but particularly, with regard to unraid servers......

Is there any need, or advantage, to setting the fixed address at device level as well as at the router?

One reason for me asking is that my W10 machine with a Mellanox 10G NIC, is that I cant get it to work on the network at all with a fixed IP. Yet, with exactly the same address assigned by pfsense DHCP, it works fine.

Thanks for looking!

Finally, I'm always asking.... never contributing, so here's my top tips for newbies/thickies like myself getting to grips with networking..... Seasoned pro's look away now...

1. After hours and days of trying to undo failed network alterations, I now find it much easier just to delete the network config files on the flash drive and start again..

2. If working with a windows network, get rid of all the windows credentials in the manager and build it back up slowly if you really need them..... And don't forget that SMB-1 needs selecting as an extra feature....

3. If your gear is not within arms reach ( mine is in the attic), IPMI/BMC is worth investing in/getting to grips with... For me, it's right up there with the wheel and Stella Artois as man's finest achievement..............
