pras1011
I am storing a lot of blu ray isos and DVD mkvs. I want two shares HD and SD. I have a 14tb server. What should I set the write allocation to? What should I set the split level to? Link to comment
prostuff1
What should I set the write allocation to? What should I set the split level to? This depends ENTIRELY on how you want to store the media and we will not be able to give an accurate answer unless we know how you are going to store it. You can put an SD folder on the disk and an HD folder on the disk. You can create a Movies folder and then the SD and HD folders inside of those. You could create a "Movies SD" and a "Movies HD" folder. 2 of the three would have the same settings in general. The middle one has slightly different settings. Link to comment
pras1011
I have created two shares: "Movies SD" folder and a "Movies HD" folder. They have the full 14tb allocation I am assuming that blu rays isos and mkv containers can't be split but I prefer complete iso/mkv not to be split but kept complete on one of the 7 hdds. Just confused on the split level and write method. Link to comment
wsume99
I'm assuming that you will be putting each movie in it's own folder within the share. Like this... Movies HD/Title 1 Movies HD/Title 2 Movies HD/Title 3 or Movies SD/Title 1 Movies SD/Title 2 Movies SD/Title 3 If that is the case then you need a split level of 1 for both shares. That means that the title folder will be placed on a drive depending on the allocation method but because of the split level the contents of the title folder will be placed on that same drive as well. For allocation method I'd suggest using the Most-Free method because it's so simple and easy to understand. When writing a new movie (i.e. title folder) to a unRAID share it will pick the disk which currently has the most free space and place the folder and it's content on that disk. Link to comment
pras1011
The movies themselves are not folders they are iso files and therefore can't be split anyway. So therefore could I set the split to 0? I will set the unraid shares in the "most free" method. Link to comment

lionelhutz
0 has a special meaning. It means that you create the directories on each disk. Use level 1. Use either most free or high water. I'd actually suggest high water. It makes passes partly filling each drive. The basic idea is to keep the free space on each drive within certain limits. For example, with a mix of 2T and 1T drives it would first fill the 2T until they have 1T free and then fill all until they had 500gig free and then again until they all had 250gig free. dgaschk
Don't forget to set your min space to at least double your largest file size. Link to comment
wsume99
And FYI (because the wiki manual does not specify) - the Min Free Space value is entered in KB. So for 50 GB of free space you would input 50,000,000. Link to comment

pras1011
I have set it at 80000000 as some blu ray iso can be about 40gb to 45gb! Link to comment

I put the commas there just to make it easier to read not thinking that I'd actually put them in the field but I can see how someone might not see it the same way as I did. I've never tried using commas with my shares so I don't know what would happen. Link to comment
opentoe
I have set it at 80000000 as some blu ray iso can be about 40gb to 45gb! So what did you end up doing and how is the data being written to the usershares? Equally across all drives? That's what I'm after right now. Link to comment
pras1011
I just added more hdds which seemed to have sorted out the problem. I am going to discuss this problem with Tom to see if we can sort this out. Link to comment
