You do not need them, but if you have a collection of movies/music that is larger than will fit on a single drive it is very easy to create a "movies" folder at the top level of each drive, enable the user-shares, and then you'll see a consolidated view of all your movies in a single share on the lan named "movies" regardless of the physical disk that are on. Keeps you from having to search multiple disks for the specific movie you might be interested in. Of course, if your media player can deal with the multiple disks, you do not need them. Some users of unRAID have never enabled them. Some, like me use them when reading (playing) files, but not when writing new files to the server. (I use hidden read-writable disk shares for that)
December 28, 201015 yr Technically no but I personally don't see why you would want to. You certainly can copy directly to the drives or disk shares. But that seems like a lot of manual work to me. A user share is basically a user defined folder that can span multiple disks. The primary benefit is that it is easier to organize and manage content. Instead of copying files to specific disks you can just copy them to a share and let unRAID distribute them across the disks based upon the way you setup the user share.
December 28, 201015 yr Author ok i got it i mixed it up with "users" the only thing that bothers me know , is that when i want to copy from the dune internal disk to my data in unraid, using teracopy, my pc running teracopy, also has to stay on as long as it is copying
December 28, 201015 yr ok i got it i mixed it up with "users"That's what I was thinking you were doing. the only thing that bothers me know , is that when i want to copy from the dune internal disk to my data in unraid, using teracopy, my pc running teracopy, also has to stay on as long as it is copying I don't know anything about the Dune so this might not apply but you can install a non-array drive into unRAID and move the files over internally within the server. It would allow you to turn off the PC and it would be a lot faster than doing it over the network. Search the forums for midnight commander (MC) or SNAP. Never used them but have read about them. Perhaps a more knowledgeable user can help you out.
December 28, 201015 yr Author well i tried copying over network, but it seems way to slow 2MB/sec it would take me 14 days! strange cause i copied before and it was a looooooot faster, maybe its cause of the dune.. so i might have to take a look at SNAP anyone?
December 28, 201015 yr I use disk shares and user shares. I have my user shares set to read only - kinda acts as a public read only system I have my disk shares set to read/write hidden - I wrote a couple of batch scripts on my windows machine so its a simple click and they copy files to the hidden disk shares. I like to have the user shares because I have multiple drives with multiple folders and when I'm using XBMC or simply browsing it looks like only 480,720,ISO,mp3,misc,photos opposed to disk1 - 480,720,ISO disk2 - 480,720,ISO disk3 - 480,720,ISO disk4 - mp3,misc,photos

Copying files to and from the Dune is terribly slow. I would have never installed a hard drive in that thing. Your best bet is to take the drive out and slap it into an external case or even a hot dock via USB or eSATA. Then you have the best of both worlds. You can still keep it attached to your Dune but you can also attach it to the unRAID server box and copy away. To avoid all this, keep it attached to the unRAID box as a regular disk (not part of the array) or attach it to another computer on your network then play your media across the LAN.
January 5, 201115 yr I don't use Dune. But I believe that you can stream directly from unRaid. There is no need to copy anything to Dune.
January 5, 201115 yr If all possible the idea is to use unRAID for all your streaming so you don't have to use other drives.
