December 29, 201015 yr I upgraded from 4.1 to 4.6, and now my server is not even visable. I don't know what else to say, but I followed the directions in the text file, and now I have nothing. Wags.
December 29, 201015 yr Are you able to access the unRaid server or are you running headless? You really need to be able to watch the boot sequence to see where it is stopping. If unRaid is booting, you need to login and capture / post a syslog.
December 30, 201015 yr Author I now know that before I got a chance to do a proper shutdown after upgrading the files on the thumbdrive that the power went out. So maybe I just need to revert back to the original 4.1 files on the thumb drive, and then I should be able to boot up. Wags
December 30, 201015 yr Be sure the Thumb Drive label is "UNRAID" and didn't get garbled with the power outage.
December 30, 201015 yr The size of the unRAID bzroot and bzimage files may have grown to where the original syslinux you used is unable to load them The fix for many has simply been to download and use the newer version of syslinux on the drive. You do NOT need to re-format the drive, nor to replace its contents... Just put it in your PC and run syslinux -ma x: (where x: = the drive letter of the flash drive)
December 30, 201015 yr Author So does it matter that the power was lost after I updated the files on the thumb drive before doing a proper shut down? I can't even find the old files on the Lime site, and stupid me, I didn't back them up. Does it do something when shutting down after the upgrade? Or is the issue that you mentioned Joe common at an upgrade? I realy wish I would have left it alone, it's worked great for years. Wags

Wags If the thumb-drive was not written to properly before you lost power you should: put it back into the PC run chkdisk on it (right click on it and run the repair utility) Then, copy the three files (bzroot, bzimage, and memtest) to it. Safely eject it from the PC Try to use it to boot. If it seems to get stuck part way, you'll probably need to use the newer syslinux on it. Yes, it is common as the unRAID distribution has grown some, and syslinux evolved to handle larger size boot images and larger size flash drives.
December 30, 201015 yr Author Well, I tried your advice Joe, replacing the files didn't work. I did hook up a monitor to the system, and here is a screen shot. http://picasaweb.google.com/lh/photo/wLyfs2PZcbguHtdbxBsLhg?feat=directlink Thank you very much for the help! Wags

Wags Did you run chkdisk on the drive? If so, download the newer syslinux and run it against the drive. Your screen shot indicates it cannot load the OS...
December 30, 201015 yr Author Yes, I ran chkdisk, and it passed. Where do I get a newer version of syslinux? I have unraid version 4.6 on the drive. And then how do I "run" it? Do I do it from a command line? Wags

Do I do it from a command line? Wags You get it from here: http://lime-technology.com/download/doc_download/4-syslinux-372 you download to your PC, unzip to c:, then follow directions as shown here (but DO NOT FORMAT THE DRIVE as you already have it formatted and loaded): http://lime-technology.com/wiki/index.php?title=USB_Flash_Drive_Preparation Just run the "syslinux -ma x:" command (where x=your flash drive letter) If on vista or win7 you'll need to be in a command window opened as "administrator".
December 30, 201015 yr Author Now Windows 7 is fighting me. It says access denied to the thumb drive. I can write to it, and delete files from it. This is a bunch of crap! Wags
December 30, 201015 yr Now Windows 7 is fighting me. It says access denied to the thumb drive. I can write to it, and delete files from it. This is a bunch of crap! Wags As I said, you need to run the command as administrator. You are right... Windows7 is a bunch of c..... Joe L.
December 30, 201015 yr Author Yes, I am administrator, and I just double checked. Damn!!! This sucks.
December 30, 201015 yr Author Now I even set up sharing on the drive, and gave everyone full read write access, and still it will not let me run syslinux on it. Wags
December 30, 201015 yr Now I even set up sharing on the drive, and gave everyone full read write access, and still it will not let me run syslinux on it. Wags You need to open the dos command window as "administrator" then run syslinux command. (right click on the "command-prompt" in the program menu, then click on run-as-adminatrator) It is not enough to be logged in as administrator. It is described in the wiki: Step 3 Click on Start / Programs / Accessories. Right-Click on Command Line Prompt and choose Run As Administrator. In the dialog box, type: syslinux -ma x:
December 30, 201015 yr Author I noticed that even though I am getting the access error, the ldlinux.sys file was showing a new modified time, so I tried to boot the server, and still no luck. A very frustrated Wags
December 30, 201015 yr Author It's amazing how a person will read something over and over, and miss one simple thing. I was making sure that I was administrator, but didn't open the command line as administrator. Stupid windows 7, you shouldn't have to do that. Well, the file that was changed before when it seemed to not work, is still the only file changed now, and the tower still will not boot. Same screen as before. Could the problem be something with the improper shutdown, and then trying to start up with a new operating system? Should I try the old version 4.1? If so, where can I get it? Wags. ps: why did I think I needed to update?
December 30, 201015 yr Author Why when I go to the Downloads page does it say syslinux 3.72, and the lattest version is 4.03? Anyone think I need to revert back to the version 4.1 unraid? I am diying here. Wags
December 30, 201015 yr Author Anyone have any other ideas? Did I just brick my server? Does Lime Tech not provide any support for their own product? This really sucks! Wags
December 30, 201015 yr Have you tried the 4.6-AiO (All In One) package? It includes the newer syslinux.
December 30, 201015 yr Anyone have any other ideas? Did I just brick my server? Does Lime Tech not provide any support for their own product? This really sucks! Wags Have you actually tried to contact Tom? Before you do anything silly, best you do that.

Wags Have you actually tried to contact Tom? Before you do anything silly, best you do that. Sorry to learn you did not have success. Send lime-tech an e-mail, point him to this thread. While you are waiting, on your window's PC save a copy of the "config" folder from the flash drive to a spot on your PC. We'll use it in a later step. I'm theorizing that syslinux is expecting the bzroot and bzimage files to be contiguous on the flash drive. I'll bet it it starting to read the file and may not be able deal with being split in pieces. So... the idea of re-formatting it so the files will be the first put onto the drive and contiguous is worth trying. Also, the idea to use lime-tech's new all-in-one distribution is not a bad one since it will do it all for you from a batch script. Download it from the link in this post: http://lime-technology.com/forum/index.php?topic=9586.0 and then un-zip it to a folder on your PC. Again you'll need on windows7 to run the "make_bootable.bat" batch file in it as administrator (right click on it then click on "Run As administrator") Once the new 4.6 is on the flash drive, you can copy the old config folder over the new, replacing it. It will have all your configuration for shares and disks within it. Don't forget to safely eject it from your PC. Joe L.
December 31, 201015 yr 1. Download "unRAID Server version 4.6 AiO" package from the main download site: http://lime-technology.com/download/cat_view/49-unraid-server 2. Plug your Flash into your PC and drag the 'config' folder onto your desktop. 3. Re-format your Flash device, ensuring volume label is UNRAID (should be already). Quick format is fine. 4. Drag the contents of the zip file to your Flash device. 5. (On Win7) right-click the file 'make_bootable' and select 'Run as administrator' (for Vista/XP just click on it). A dos window will open, you should see no "ERROR" message - hit any key to continue. Your Flash is now bootable. 6. To restore your configuration, drag the 'config' folder from your desktop to the Flash, replacing the 'config' folder that's on the Flash. 7. Right-click the Flash under Computer (Win7) or My Computer (XP/Vista), and select Eject. 8. Plug Flash into your server and all will be well with the world once again
December 31, 201015 yr Author Thanks for the help, but FAIL! I have the same exact results as the screen shot I posted earlier. What is the root device, or block (8,1)? Wags
