My Build - Problem's

This is my first setup for a permanent Unraid server, I have messed about before with Unraid on my current hardware with minor success and decided to hold off for a bit, but now the time has come I have needed to upgrade  my home pc, my sons pc and also my daughter wanted one too.

 

 

I decided on building a all in one system with the use of Unraid, so far I have the server running for over 7 hrs with no issues, I am currently having dramas with passing through the GPU's, I have followed Spaceinvaderone's tutorials but still have dramas, all I am trying to do is run 3x gaming vms with windows 10, I can load them up with  NOVNC installed all the relivant apps ect, downloaded the latest drivers but cannot install them because there is no GPU (Sometimes the VM's Crash and reboot, but not affecting the server), so I then edit vm setting and add the required GPU + its sound device from the same Group and then proceed to start the VM and all I get is a blank screen.

All VM's are Windows 10 Pro, with 6 Cores + 6 Hyperthreads Two with 12GB Ram, 1 With 6GB leaving 2GB for Unraid.

Some pointers:

  • Watch SpaceInvader One tutorial on how to dump your own vbios and see if it helps. If you already boot Unraid with the HD6450 and still have black screens then a vbios is needed. It is no guarantee but it should help, unless the card just can't be passed through at all.
  • 2GB for Unraid is probably too little. I would suggest to start with 8GB for each VM and then see your memory usage and then increase it slowly. You want to make sure your GPU issue is sorted before going on in with the RAM.
  • With your plan, you definitely want ACS Override = Both (i.e. downstream + multifunction). It would also be useful to vfio-pci.ids stub your to-be-passed-through graphic cards (there's a SpaceInvader One tutorial on that - it's about stubbing and passing through USB device but the same principle would apply to GPU).
  • Your core assignment is almost certainly not ideal but let's sort the graphics first then we can talk tuning.

Watch SpaceInvader One tutorial on how to dump your own vbios and see if it helps. If you already boot Unraid with the HD6450 and still have black screens then a vbios is needed. It is no guarantee but it should help, unless the card just can't be passed through at all.

The HD6450 is displaying unraid on the monitor i can login ect.. no problems there just with the VM's

 

I have tried the vBios for each card using Techpowerup site as per the guide by Spaceinvader one, still nothing.

Firstly, the error is with regards to IOMMU group, which was why I suggested you turn ACS Override to "Both".

Based on you IOMMU grouping, ACS Override isn't activated (because 41:00.0 is still in group 17) so I would suggest you turn that on first and foremost.

 

Secondly, please dump your own vbios. SIO has a tutorial for that.

Downloading from Techpowerup is a last resort if you can't dump your own vbios (which you certainly can because you have Unraid booted on a different graphic card). It's not at all uncommon for new users to download the wrong vbios - and when it comes to vbios, having no rom is better than having wrong rom.

 

Also next time you copy-paste text from Unraid GUI, please use the forum code functionality (the </> button next to the smiley button) so the text is formatted and sectioned correctly. Save you the effort of manually highlighting the device.

Just a heads up, I removed all VM's and reinstalled one, first of all via VNC installed everything then once done, I Rebooted then edited so it had a Fury-x I then connected via splashtop and installed the video drivers, once done, i shut down the system properly then I have tried to reboot the VM and nothing is working, not even splashtop.

 

I'm so confused by this, do you have any pointer where I can look?

I have just tried this morning and the VM can be accessed by splashtop once loaded up, but I noticed the AMD software installed, but there was no sign of the GPU in the device manager list..?

 

the Fury-x is selected in the VM tab though, so I can only think its not passing through the GPU?

 

I have created another VM for the GTX 660, currently getting code 43 so I am following guides to fix that atm.

I have managed to create a new VM, set it up, installed old AMD drivers they work I can reboot the VM and it loads up and displays correctly, Every VM so far has frozen when in use and its unrecoverable.

My server became unresponsive at the same time.

 

 

After a reboot I have tried to start the VM but back to square one.

 

This is so anoying, everything is working fine for 10 mins then upon restart its back to hours of endless reinstalling VM's ect..

 

How is it that every video I see shows me what is possible but never the reality?

Sorry to hear you're having trouble. I know how frustrating it can be when things don't work as expected. However, do persevere, once it's all working, it's amazing. I'm running 3x VMs permanently, two MacOS workstations with multi-device passthrough and one Win10 headless. They have been rock solid (apart from this past couple of weeks when I added some more RAM that turns out is definitely not liked by my system!

 

You're on the right track by attempting to get one VM up and running with stability first. Anyway, there's a few things you can try....

 

1. Try installing GPU drivers not in Splashtop mode but booted to the GPU (if you can). Many GPUs will output a low resolution display without drivers. It might be better to do the install with display attached etc.

 

2. Try re-making your VM as i440 rather than Q35. I have had issues in the past where, in particular, AMD drivers would not even install in one config, but were fine in the other. (you need to completely remake your VM to make this change)

 

3. If you haven't already, try using SeaBios as the bios. I've found this more stable/reliable

 

4. Likely not an issue as you're booting windows, but often MacOS VMs get shirty if the number of CPU cores passed through don't match a real Mac. So, they work well with 4 or 8, but not 5, 6 or 7.  Also, Windows VMs used to have an issue applying windows updates when more than a single CPU core was defined. It might be worth your while reducing or adjusting the CPU config, just for testing.

 

5. In your XML, you  should update this;

This is your GPU audio device, and the change is subtle. I've adjusted the bus from '6' to '5' to match the HDMI config, but bumped the function from '0' to '1'. This is a more realistic configuration and, given your issue appears to be with your GPU, might have an impact. You need to make this change in XML mode, and repeat it if you happen to change/re-save your GPU from the form editor.

Hi, after messing about trying all difrent variations of a VM template, I have got it working but the VM locks up all 12 cores I have assigned it, I have attached a log.

Anyone got any ideas why the VM's are locking all cores out on 100% it can be core 0 by itself or even with 12 cores + hyperthreads assigned it runs for about 5 mins then maxes out all the cores, reboots and then it all starts again, when installing windows updates it also gives me a generic windows error on both vm's,

I have a new iso downloaded a couple of days ago from microsoft, but I got 5 days of trial left and only 2 weeks before I have to return to work, I need a minimum of 2 VM's running well enough for playing games, I dont want to give up.

This was a long time ago, I'm tempted to look at this again over the Christmas period, not sure if I can be bothered to go through the messing about again to see the same result, has anyone got any idea what may have been causing this?

 

In the end I got another 2 PC's to do this job, at a big expense, would be great to reduce them to a single unit.
