Sooner support for >2Tb drives

Can a Mac be booted from unRAID?  All modern Macs use UEFI, right?

  • 2 weeks later...

isn't UEFI just needed to boot from an drive>3TB?

Question

can we install an OS on the new 3TB SATA harddrives

Answer

Yes, but only if mainboard uses UEFI for >2TB harddisk boot support

if mainboard does not support UEFI then OS can not install on a disk volume larger then 2TB

this would imply >2TB drives could possibly still be used as data disks

I'd consider it to be really strange if only just released board would support 3TB disks. but then again I'm just speculating.

UEFI is needed just for booting from a 3TB drive.

Data drives don't need UEFI support but still need OS support.

Speaking of UEFI, will unRaid work on the current UEFI motherboards?  I was thinking of picking up a UEFI H67 based board in the next few days.

I don't believe that anybody has tested it yet.

unRAID boots just fine on my Asus P8P67 Pro w/ i7-2600k.

But it boots from the flash drive, correct?

Yes

Bumping, because drive density is more beneficial than drive quantity.

Bump because of recent deals like this:

um....

You do realize that 3TB support is in the latest 5.0b7 release right.

3TB support WILL NOT (more than likely) be coming to the 4.7 series, so don't hold your breath for that.

Whoops, wow.  I seriously fail.  I guess I missed it in the changelog.  Thanks for the heads up.
