Move to New USB Boot Drive

Recommended Posts

New, trial user here.

After only a few days it's obvious to me I will be paying for Unraid once the trial runs out.  I purchased a different USB drive I'd like to use but hate to waste my free registration transfer on a trial.  Will the free transfer reset when I register the software?  I'm only changing drives for cosmetic reasons - the current one sticks out more than I'd like and the new one I bought will sit flush to the machine.

I have a similar question and will reuse this topic.

At the moment i'm on an extended trial. 10 days left. Within the next few days my new usb stick arrive and i want to purchase the product.

But i'm not sure how the steps are done in the right order to prevent the waste of my free license transfer.

Maybe you can verify or correct my steps to prevent wasing my free license transfer:

  1. Backup my current configuration through unraid UI from the trial USB stick "T"
  2. Make a fresh install on the new USB stick "N"
  3. Boot the server with stick "N"
  4. Shutdown the server
  5. Copy "config" folder and all subdirectories (including tial.key file?) to new Stick "N" from the backup of stick "T"
  6. Boot the server with stick "N" (now my VMs, Array configuration etc. are as before?)
  7. Purchase the Product

Best regards

Thx for your reply,

so i have to copy the tial.key inside the config folder from current usb stick backup too?

I thought this will lead to an license transfer.

Up to you.   You cannot do licence transfer of trial keys, it only applies to purchased keys so you would need a purchased key before all your settings files in the config folder are accepted.   Once you have your purchased licence key it is a good idea to make sure you do NOT have a copy of the trial licence file in the config folder as it may lead to confusion further down the line.
