SSD nvme or sata

Recommended Posts

Hi !

I will soon install my Unraid server but before I would have liked to have your advice on the choice of ssd for everything (cache, vm etc.)

I already have at home:

  • 1x SSD SATA 128Go
  • 1X SSD SATA 256Go
  • 1X SSD SATA 500GO
  • 1x SSD NVME 500Go

My pool:

  • 4X Hard Drive SATA 12To

my use of Unraid:

  • VM Gaming
  • Plex Server
  • +10 containers
  • 2-3 VM linux
  • 4-5 minecraft server

My Configuration:

  • CPU: Ryzen 9 3950X
  • RAM: 64Go

For now I was planning to do this:

  • SSD SATA 250Go: VM Gagming
  • SSD SATA 128GO plex server and containers
  • SSD NVME 500GO: Cache
  • SSD SATA 500Go for other (VM etc.)

thank you in advance for your help 😃

I would say use your NVME drive for your VMs, particularly your gaming VM. You dont really need NVME as a cache drive unless you are looking to transfer files to your system quickly but unless you are using a 10GB NIC you will not get any benefit with an NVME cache drive as a SATA SSD can easily handle gigabit transfers. If you are using plex dont forget to transcode to ram, you have plenty in that system.
