Advice on disk setup

Featured Replies

Hi together,

I am new to the forum and also to UnRAID. I've read a lot and planning my setup for a decent time now.

At the moment I'm struggeling which is the best disk setup for my case / what I should buy.

Could you please comment on this 😉

This is my current plan:

1x 10TB WD Red: Parity

3x 10TB WD Red: Array

1x 1 or 2 TB SanDisk Extreme Pro M.2 NVMe 3D PCIe: Cache

*1x 256GB Intel 600P M.2 NVMe PCIe: Docker containers

*1x 1TB Samsung 860 EVO SATA: VMs

*1x 500GB Samsung 840 EVO SATA: Plex

*drives I already own

First of all, would you recommend moving Docker containers, VMs, Plex to its own SSD drives or is it not necessary in regards of performance?

I was also thinking about getting 1 or 2 more of the SanDisk Extremes like the one above and replace it with one of the other SSDs.

I plan to have the SSDs as unassigned devices in UnRAID and give the applications above the performance they need.

The MB I'm going to buy has 8 SATA ports, 1 M.2 slot and 10GBit network natively. So this won't be the bottleneck.

My use case:

- array stores mainly backup and media (also for Plex)

- want good performance for Plex (transcoding)

- need large cache as I edit photos and videos from time to time with folder sizes of 50-200GB

- around 10 docker containers (for now)

- aim on having 1-3 VMs active, depends on the situation

- future project: move my GPU to the server and use a VM with GPU passthrough for gaming 😎

Thanks in advance! 🤗
