Temp Monitor Errors - Ryzen+X570 (ASUS TUF)

Hi all,

I've been trying for a while to get temp monitor working with My Ryzen setup.

Trying to get the temps working for my ASUS TUF GAMING X570-PLUS (WI-FI), without much luck.

Recently with the 6.9.0-beta1 release, I understand that there is support in the new kernel.

 

When I initially upgraded from 6.8.3 to 6.9.0-beta1, I noticed that some temps were visible, but they have gone and now I get an error in my log when I "Load Drivers".

 

I've seen in the 6.9.0-beta1 release thread that I should add `acpi_enforce_resources=lax` to my flash syslinux config, which I did:

(I also loaded perl from Nerd pack without issue or error).

@KptnKMan May I ask you for a quick review of that board?

Did you ran into any problems? (beside this here with the temp monitor)

Or do you got useful tips/hints for better bios settings or an unproblematic unRAID installation?

 

I'm planing to send my i7 6700 in his well earned retirement and the ASUS TUF GAMING X570-PLUS is one of my two options. 

I don't need the WiFi model but as far as I researched all other specs are totally identical.

Hey @Maddeen I wrote a response to you but apparently it seemed to have not posted a week ago.

 

The ASUS TUF GAMING X570-PLUS (WI-FI) is a great board for my Unraid.

I've had no issues with it, apart from the thermal sensor issue in this thread.

I currently run 64GB (2x 32GB) of Micron Multi-Bit ECC DDR4 at 3200MHz and it works great. I'm considering doubling that.

The reason I got this board is because I wanted a board that was:

- rock-solid stable

- X570 chipset

- 2x NVME M.2 x4 PCIe Gen 4 slots

- ECC support (unofficial, but ASUS is good with including ECC support)

- 8x onboard SATA

- 2x PCIe x16 slots

 

It delivered on all those accounts.

I don't use the onboard WiFi but I wanted to possibly make a VM as a AP, and host that in Unraid.

 

Also, it would seem that I got the thermal sensor to finally work on the 2407 BIOS, no idea what changed.

So even that niggle seems to be working now.

I wasn't sure if my first decision for this board is right - but after your review, I'll definitely go with the TUF - but without WiFi, because I dont have a usecase for that 😜

 

I selected the TUF over others because of the following reasons

- X570 Chipset to be able to use latest Ryzen 

- 8x SATA

- No PCI-E lane sharing. 

Last bullet point wasn't as easy as I thought.

I was kind of shocked when I found out that the majority of the boards (even the more expensive) share PCI-E lanes or - even worse - share m.2 with SATA. 

 

Do you use any 10Gb NIC and have a recommendation too?

 

And please - if you need to made any special "moves" to get the thermal sensor running - please write it down here 😝

Wow thanks for this, i was literally about to get this card but decided to do some research on it first... don't like the look of this but friends of mine have had fine experiences with it - still the risk is enough for me to go down another road...

@Maddeen I didn't have to do anything special to get the temp monitor to work, but now it is:

I'm still on the 2407 BIOS, so it might be that version that got things working, but I'll need to update at some point as I intend to upgrade to a Ryzen 5000-series CPU in the coming months.

 

@mscott I have no idea what "card" you're referring to. Can you explain?

@Maddeen The only gripe I might have with this motherboard is the lack of PCIe slots, but the chipset is PCIe 4.0, so that probably explains the dedicated lanes.

I am waiting for a PCIe4.0 1x 10Gb NIC to come out.

 

Right now I'm using a PCIe 1x Dual 1Gb Intel card, teamed with my onboard, for 3Gb throughput, and that works well.

My backup Unraid also uses the same configuration, and I get a nice 3Gb/s between them.

 

There are PCIe4.0 1x NICs with 4x 1Gb on them, but I'm not too concerned about them right now.

Oooh, I would have waited just a couple weeks for the Ryzen 5000 chips, in particular the 5600X or 5800X for you.

 

Anyhow, I upgraded from my (Now Backup) unraid to my new Ryzen build earlier this year.

If you have your array setup now without any issues, and you're migrating to the same version, it should be easy to swap your disks out. You'll be able to find plenty of advice on this forum about that, from better people than me. :)

 

You should basically be able to swap your hardware out, as far as I'm aware.

I already made one board+cpu change earlier this year. I just asked in relation to the X570 especially. 

So if you don't need to do some special "tricks" to get in run, I'm fine :) 

 

btw - have you found here in the community a guide for the best bios settings? I searched for it but due to the mass of keywords like "bios" in the results I didn't found one ;-)

 

I was pondered if I want to wait but I get a (imho) special offer - I just paying 200€ ($236) for a new X3700. 

For this price I not even get a 5600 - :(

From what I understand, yes.

Does not hurt to make a backup of your flash and note your disk assignements, just in case.

Also, if you have VMs, the passthrough elements would have to be checked and potentially changed.

Hi. i have the same specs. migrate mobo and cpu. but has problems at the start . Whats is your disk assignment on the Sata ports ?

Initially I started

sata 1 Parity1 4tb

sata 2 parity2 4tb

sata 3 Disk 1 4tb

sata 4 Disk 2 4tb

sata 5 disk 3 4tb

sata 6 disk 4 4tb

sata 7 SSD Cache 256gb

sata 8 SSD unassigned vm storage 128gb

m2. slot 1 nvme 250gb unassigned, for pass to VM

 

1 vga GTX 1060 for pass Win 10 VM

1 vga Radeon 580 for pass OS X VM

1 Sound blaster ZXR for pass win 10VM 

 

With that configuration I have problems with the array and errors on Sata 1 and Sata 6, both disk was disabled after severals read errors.

 

I removed the M2 Slot 1 and everything start working properly, I rebuild data from disk 4 and rebuild parity 1 drive.

 

 

 

I think asus disable 2 Sata ports if you are using a nvme drive but is not mentioned on the manual. I tested 3 weeks ago a x470 mainboard and in the documentation its special section that mentions the Sata ports disabled with the use of the m2 slots.

 

now my only problem remains in the data temp.

This is NOT true, and you should not be telling people to make decisions like this based on your unfounded assumption that it is not in the manual.

You should also NOT be making recommendations based upon assumption of something you saw in another motherboards manual, with a different chipset generation. Please don't do that.

 

I am using all 8 SATA ports and both NVME slots, and all work fine together.

 

If you are using THE EXACT SAME motherboard, it sounds like you have a fault and should probably contact ASUS support.

Everything is working fine for me, and I also only have the same 2 monitors now.

From what I can see, the other "jc42" sensor is not not detected, and I have all the monitors that I need.

So between BIOS updates looks like they fixed it.

@NetMaster - I dont need all ports, but I have 6x SATA Ports  (4x 4TB Iron Wolf 2x 512 SSD Cache pool) and one m2 slot (the one with the heat sink - bare metal win10 installation) in use - no problems. 

And as KptnKMan said - there is no sharing/disabling - neither pci-e sharing nor SATA sharing! 
That's why I (and KptnKMan too - i think) choose that board instead of others which use sharing.

that is the reason i am asking for help.

8 sata ports are working fine without m2 slots in use.

test lab was 1 slot m2 nvme with 3 sata ports and 1 VGA, was running perfect with no issues.

i read similar complaints in asus forums about this. what bios version are you running ? running bios 2607 for me.

 

i never made a recommendations  about anything. just posted what  i've experienced in my tests.

i read also about max pci-e lane are not enough and  shared bandwidth is enabled if you try to run all slots at max speed.  any readings recommendations with those specs and architecture specifications ?

I've done a bit more research and think this may have to do with not having enough PCIe Lanes.

I'm using a Ryzen 7 3700x = 24 PCIe Lanes

Chipset - 4 lanes
1 x nvme SSD - 4 lanes
GPU (2070 super) - 16 lanes

= not enough lanes for the additional nvme SSD?

So maybe I need a 2.5 SSD instead

 

i don't know about lanes assigned. or how are handled by the motherboard.

If you want help then start a thread and people can choose to respond there, don't derail another thread.

It's rude to other people trying to discuss and get help for their particular issues.

 

We are discussing the temp monitor addon, getting it working, and which BIOS version it works with on this particular motherboard.

You also STILL have not indicated exactly which motherboard you are in fact using, and nothing is in your signature.

 

Or contact ASUS support, as I advised.

@Maddeen This seemed to be something with the earlier BIOS version I was on.

 

I'm planning to get a Ryzen 5000 chip in the future when they become generally available, so I've been wondering if anything will change again with that upgrade.

 

The newer Ryzen 5000 chips require a BIOS with AGESA 1.0.8.0, but I think they recommend AGESA 1.1.0.0 for full support.

I'm currently on 2407, but my Ryzen 9 5950x just arrived, so I need to upgrade.

 

I've downloaded the 2802 non-beta and the 2816 beta BIOS, but I'll be using the non-beta for now as it has AGESA 1.1.0.0 needed for Zen 3.

For the record, I think Zen 3 requires at least AGESA 1.0.8.0, in BIOS version 2607+.

 

Gonna do that first and see if temp monitors are still working, before swapping in the new chip.
