Keep BTRFS, or switch to XFS?

Featured Replies

I started out using BTRFS, but then lost some data so I'm no longer a big fan. Since my data loss I've been formatting new drives as XFS, so I've got a mix of both XFS and BTRFS drives in my array. For the first time in a very long time, I've got more free space in the array than my largest BTRFS-formatted drive, so if I'm ever going to convert to XFS, now's the time.

Should I bother?

If I should, what's the best method? Essentially, I want to tell unRAID, "move stuff off this drive, and don't put anything new on it while you're doing that," until it's empty. Presumably there's a way to do this—how do I set that up and get it running?

Once that's done, I'd then want to format the formerly-BTRFS drive as XFS, and lather-rinse-repeat through the other BTRFS drives.
