Unassigned Devices - Managing Disk Drives and Remote Shares Outside of The Unraid Array

I need to update that, the procedures were added later (if you use the GUI it will still change back to raid1), note however that to you can't remove a disk past the minimum number that the profile in use requires, eg, if you have a 8 device raid10 pool you can remove 4 devices without changing the profile, to remove anymore you'll need to convert.

Got it, thanks.  Looking forward to the post update.  How do I make the change stick?  If it requires command-line I'd appreciate a little most detail because I'm very new to this.

Edit: I see the post has been updated, it says to find the appropriate procedure through the FAQ (links to main section).  Would you mind helping me locate exactly which procedure that would be? Sorry for being a bother with this

I'm having an issue mounting a 4tb ntfs drive. I've read through the guide multiple time, uninstalled reinstalled. When I check the logs it doesn't specify and error

Quote

Mar 21 16:58:49 Mount drive command: /sbin/mount -t ntfs -o auto,async,noatime,nodiratime,nodev,nosuid,umask=000 '/dev/sde2' '/mnt/disks/4tb'
Mar 21 16:58:49 Mount of '/dev/sde2' failed. Error message:

Not super helpful. I assigned the default script to the drive.

I have been trying to find any info on this for days.

I read you need ntfs3g drivers for over 2tb on unraid 5 I tried them on mine and it didn't seem to help

I was trying to post in The Plugin Support forum and it was greyed out. Is that a stop newbies from posting thing or...?

Also there was a gpt partition that I deleted thinking it may have been the cause but... nope.

This is the right place to post your issue.

You have not provided enough information.  Please post your diagnostics.

The ntfs3g drivers are now included in unRAID.

Hi,

Looking into this topic, I can't find anyone asking to use a nfs mount in staid of SMB.

I would like to export a nfs mount from one of my unassigned disk. I dont need to be in the pool array.

Anyway to achieve this ?

I tried manually adding the share in /etc/exports.. it works but if I add/mod/delete a share in the pool array, the nfs mount disappears .

Thank for any info :)

As you have done, you should post in the support thread already started for the specific plugin you want to get support for.

Creating new threads here should only be done by plugin developers for new plugins they will support.

I'm pretty new to this sorry. How would I find this diagnostic? Is it a Unassigned Device specific one or Unraid in general?

EDIT: Found the unraid diagnostics. I think that's what I'm looking for it gave me a zip with tons of configs and logs which one do you need?

I see several things.  Clean these up and then see if UD will mount the disk.

You have unmenu in the /boot/config/plugins.  I'd remove that.  It is not necessary and may have some incompatibilities with the latest unRAID version.

-rwxrwxrwx 1 root root 3864 Mar 8 07:30 unmenu_install1371.zip

You are installing a wrong version of ntfs-3g.  Remove it.  The proper version is already installed in unRAID.

You have a browser open to unRAID when you booted and it's generating errors.  Close all when rebooting.  This keeps UD from working properly.

Why do you have the array autostart disabled?

You need to pay attention to the Fix Common Problems messages and fix anything it tells you is a problem.

Hi

I have mounted a windows share drive via unassigned devices. But there is a one big problem. If some reason it lost connection to that network share and i open unraid web gui then it makes web ui unresponsive. Won't open until i restart unraid server.

How about some more information.  What version of unRAID?  What version of UD?  That problem should have been fixed in UD.

Hello.

I am trying to copy the data from the Hdds of an Unraid 4.7 server that the motherboard died. Since I have a new Unraid 6.3.2 system I installed the drives in that and I am trying to copy the data using the unassigned devices. The drives mount correctly as unassigned and Dolphin, file manager in docker, sees them. Problem is when I try to browse the contents of the drives so that I can copy them it asks for user name and password that obviously I don't have unless they exist in the usb stick of the Unraid 4.7 where the drives belonged.

Any suggestion?

Thanks

Don't know about dolphin, but have you tried in mc (Midnight Commander), where you would be root? There were permission changes after 4.7, you may have to fix that from the command line with an Unassigned Device, or if you could get them copied to your array there is a way to fix those files from webUI.

I don't see in the log where UD mounted any drives.

The nvme disk does not have the '+' and the drive says it's mounted, but it doesn't show a Temp, or FS;  Look at the smart report on the drive and see if there are any issues.

Download the uD log and post it.  Also post your /flash/config/plugins/unassigned.devices/unassigned.devices.cfg file.  It looks like the UD configuration for that drive is corrupted.

I would uninstall UD and delete the /flash/config/plugins/unassigned.devices directory and then re-install and start over.  Your disk configuration is missing.

Feature Request: It would be nice to have the possibility to spin down/up drives from the GUI.

I don't see any value in this.  UD issues a 15 minute standby/sleep command to a drive and a drive will spin up as needed when accessed.  There is no need to do a manual spin up/down from the GUI.
