Vdisk vs UD passthrough via XML vs SATA controller passthrough

Recommended Posts

Jumping into a Win10 gaming VM and wanted to understand the considerations between some of the options in this space and see how they might differ.

I am consolidating my existing baremetal gaming system into my existing Unraid build. And I was planning on moving the BM systems Evo 860 m2 over to unraid, placing it into a 2.5 sata enclosure (my only m2 on the board is being used by cache drive nvme) and passing through this 860 to the Win10 VM using the unassigned devices 'pass through' tab and setting it up correctly within the xml settings for the VM. I've done this before and the VM indeed does see the entire drive.

But I am not sure if that particular setup has the same overhead as passing through an entire SATA controller, or even how it compares with a vdisk image file instead.
