Which 2 TB drive should I buy?

Recommended Posts

I thought these drives are not advanced format?  Why would you use sector 64?

They are not advanced format per say.  But they will work equally well with a start sector of 64 as they would with 63.  With this server also having some WD Advanced Format drives in it I wanted to make sure the setting in the unRAID WebGUI was 4-K aligned (so no jumper is needed later).

Advanced format or not a drive can start at sector 64 regardless.  There will be no issues with performance going that way.  If you sector 63 on a WD Advanced Format drive without a jumper you will run into the performance issue.

Regarding the new Hitachi green drives (5K3000):

Has anyone completed all of the following?

1) Precleared at least 2 passes starting at sector 63 (the default option in preclear)

Yes, 3 cycles @ 65 total hours = ~ 21 2/3 hours per cycle.  No errors whatsoever.  I've done this for 2 Hitachi 5K3000 2TB drives, and posted the results for one below (the other drive results look identical):

** Changed attributes in files: /tmp/smart_start_sda  /tmp/smart_finish_sda
               ATTRIBUTE   NEW_VAL OLD_VAL FAILURE_THRESHOLD STATUS      RAW_VALUE
     Temperature_Celsius =   193     214            0        ok          31
No SMART attributes are FAILING_NOW

0 sectors were pending re-allocation before the start of the preclear.
0 sectors were pending re-allocation after pre-read in cycle 1 of 3.
0 sectors were pending re-allocation after zero of disk in cycle 1 of 3.
0 sectors were pending re-allocation after post-read in cycle 1 of 3.
0 sectors were pending re-allocation after zero of disk in cycle 2 of 3.
0 sectors were pending re-allocation after post-read in cycle 2 of 3.
0 sectors were pending re-allocation after zero of disk in cycle 3 of 3.
0 sectors are pending re-allocation at the end of the preclear,
the number of sectors pending re-allocation did not change.
0 sectors had been re-allocated before the start of the preclear.
0 sectors are re-allocated at the end of the preclear,
the number of sectors re-allocated did not change.

I've been using a 1.5TB Samsung drive since July, and also a Samsung F4 2TB drive since August without issues. This is not in an unRAID server, just my main PC. It is unpatched, and I am annoyed that Samsung would provide a new firmware patch that has the same version number as the "bad" firmware. I don't know why anyone would do such a thing. The 2TB is aligned, and it is FAST, as is the 1.5TB drive, just not as fast.

I'm hoping that the Hitachi Green drives are without problems, but the F4 2TB drives were THE drive to have before it took a few months to discover the silent corruption issue. I wish a drive maker could produce a 2TB drive that just plain works.

I have sent the Hitachi Greens through 2 complete passes of preclear so far and have not run into any issues.

I am doing 4 preclears at the same time on 2 Hitachi Green and 2 WD Green drives.  The 3 pass should finish up sometime late tonight and I will see if I can post some numbers for you all.  If I remember off the top of my head the prelcear is taking around 25 hours for the 2TB drives.

So the HITACHI Deskstar 5K3000 would be better to buy instead of the WD Ears?  I am ready to buy some rather then buy the Hitachi...  ???

Hitachis are usually very solid drives. My 7200 Hitachis (4 2Teras) have performed flawlessly on my limited testing, on NAS and Media PC.

I've put off the order for the 2TB drives for my unRAID project, hoping the Hitachi greens became available here, or found encouraging testing in here. But nothing yet.

Tests as those being conducted now by prostuff1 will be crucial for my decision. It seems it will be either the WD Ears, unless his results show some issues, or the Hitachi Greens if the local market sorts itself out.

Will be looking forward to prostuff1's next post. I need, would like to order by next week. Want to start throwing my unRAID bits together.  ;D

I agree.  I have 6 and have not had a single problem with any of them, and some are over a year old already.

Wait, what?  I have already done exactly what Prostuff is currently doing, except my cycles were 100% sector 63.  Look at this post. :)

Hi Aiden, Thanks for the link to your tests. Just went there. Will try to buy the EARS this weekend.

Thank you!!

Ramon

Hm... I guess I need to make my results more clear.  They are specific to the Hitachi 5K3000 2TB drives that were just released.

But the Hitachi greens are not yet on sale in Australia, so we continue on track to build ASAP ::)

I must have misunderstood you.  I read your post and thought you were trying to decide between the EARS and the new Hitachi.  Now that I reread it you were saying that you are waiting for Prostuff's EARS results, or for the Hitachis to become available within the next week.  Obviously you have to go with what's available to you :), and the EARS are heavily used in current unRAID builds.

No worries. I think you somehow saw in my post what I'm looking for-  :) I do prefer the Hitachis, due to their great history with Business and Industry use, and in my case, the ease of applying the AAM and keep them quiet, though the ones I own, still at 7200rpm.

But you're right on the money. We have the EARS available, and I just saw on one of my preferred retailers-On Sale this weekend.

Thus, buying the EARS for now. Maybe will just buy a first batch, and complete my Fractal XL when the Hitachi Greens land in Ozz.

Thanks again,

Ramon

Anyone use this drive ? It seems to be the new green barracuda drive from Seagate that's on sale...

Seagate

BARRACUDA GREEN 2TB - 3.5IN 5900RPM 64MB SATA 6GB/S

manufacturer #: ST2000DL003

Seagate SmartAlign technology simplifies your transition to the Advanced Format (AF), 4K standard. There is no need for time-consuming integration utilities required by similar AF drives.

Sorry for the double post like this but wanted to make sure these were kept separate!

Anyway, I have two of the new Hitachi "CoolSpin" drives in a client build and have been testing them with preclear and diskspeed.sh.

System Specs (that are important):

Motherboard: Intel BOXDB43LD LGA 775 Intel B43 Micro ATX Intel Motherboard

Hard Drives: 2x2TB Hitachi CoolSpin drives and 2x2TB Western Digital Green drives

While I don't have exact numbers for the preclear anymore I can tell you that the Hitachi's cleared between 1 and 1.5 hours faster then the Western Digitals in the same system.  I was running 4 preclear cycles on the drives at the same time in the system that has 2GB of RAM.  The Hitachi's took around 25 hours for 1 pass and the Western Digitals took just shy of 27 hours for 1 pass.

Now, for the WRITE results on every drive:

All of the above tests were done one after the other, with no other activity happening on the server, with completely empty disks, and the server was restarted between tests on each disk.

I can corroborate the Hitachi speeds.  Same tests, mounted in the array with parity protection on an empty precleared 5K3000 2TB.  And a 3 cycle preclear took 21.7 hours per cycle.  These drives are impressing me.
