January 6, 201115 yr Got home today to find that the server has crashed. I couldn't telnet to it to get a syslog. So I had to reset it. I have rebooted it and I took a syslog. Can someone check it for me to make sure everything is ok? syslog.txt
January 7, 201115 yr Author Thanks again Joe. This is now my four crash with 5.0 beta 2. Three caused by a kernel opps and one unknown. I think I will go to 4.6 to save me the headache!
January 7, 201115 yr I'm a brand new user myself and had the chance to use 5.0 version, but stuck with the stable 4.6. While there are some fixes and polishing done in the 5, I would never use a beta program specially for backing/saving my data. I hope something like that does get fixed though, scarey to find out you had a crash but nothing indicates you did.
January 8, 201115 yr The assumption is that this crash has something to do with 5.0b2. I think that it is unlikely. If you can't telnet into the server you could try accessing the syslog directly from the console. You can also install Weebotech's powerdown script which will save a copy of the syslog to the flash and do it's best to shutdown the server cleanly. It is configured to run on ctrl-alt-del and on pressing the power button, so you can run this even headless.
January 8, 201115 yr Author The three crashes I had occurred when I clicked apply after selecting 15 min spindown. In the syslog it mentioned kernel opps. For the fourth crash:- what do mean by console? Do you mean plugging a keyboard into the server and using its video connectors to a monitor/tv? I use the HDMI out on the motherboard to my amp but half of the time I dont get a picture. I tried it when it crashed and I didn't get a picture.
January 8, 201115 yr Try installing the powerdown package. Makes it quite easy to shutdown the server cleanly and capture a syslog.
January 8, 201115 yr Author But how can I use the powerdown package when I can't access the server? I can't even do CRTL ALT DEL!
January 8, 201115 yr But how can I use the powerdown package when I can't access the server? I can't even do CRTL ALT DEL! A momentary press of the power button would trigger an orderly shutdown and a save of a copy of the system log. (assuming it was not a hard crash, in which case even a CTL-ALT-DEL would not be effective) Joe L.
