Unraid Hardware Usage

Recommended Posts

I have read a few posts that don't really answer my question - so maybe my question is incorrect. But here it goes: What does Unraid use, hardware wise? I mean, if I had a 16 core CPU and 16GB Ram (and it boots off the USB) can I expect that 2 Cores and 1-2GB Ram will be "taken up" leaving 14GB Ram and 14 Cores for my VMs?

Ultimately, I would like to build a Plex/Media Server for my home and have a Gaming rig on the side while being able to do some of my coding in a third VM, preferably all running concurrently.

Thanks in advance!

Unraid will use all resources available to it. Any resources that you dedicate to a VM will be unavailable to Unraid. The more resources you leave for Unraid, the faster it can serve the emulated resources to the VM.

Think of Unraid as the motherboard for your VM's. If you restrict the speed of the motherboard, it doesn't matter much how fast your CPU is or how much RAM you have, the computer isn't going to run very well.

3 VM's running concurrently on 16GB of RAM is going to be extremely tight.
