[SOLVED] Viewing files crashes Windows Explorer

Recommended Posts

Hi all,

New builder here, got unRAID up and running and all my data transferred to it, but I'm now running into a weird problem whenever I try to access my data on the server.

I have a few user shares like "Movies", "Music" etc that keep my files, but when I try to access the files in the lowest folder, Windows Explorer will freeze opening that folder (the status bar at the top will take forever to open the folder, and then will either say it cannot access that directory, or just freeze windows explorer altogether). Oddly, most of the time it seems to happen only where the actual data is, so for example my Movies folder structure is like //tower/Movies/Apollo 13/Apollo 13.mkv, and I can navigate to the tower and Movies folders easily (so I can see the subfolders for all my movies quickly) but when I try to open the Apollo 13 folder to get to the file, the freeze happens.

This isn't 100% consistent on where the problem starts, but it freezes quickly within a few clicks always (for example I've actually gotten to a movie's files, but then when trying to navigate up to the "Movies" folder, it freezes again, etc.). All my disks are spun up, I've rebooted everything and the problem persists, I'm on Gigabit LAN with working connections, and have tested this from 2 separate computers on the network with the same results. Any ideas what the problem is?

Thanks!

Edit: Because that was likely a terrible explanation, I threw up a quick vid capturing what I'm talking about: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=8hRX2yvTNb0

Edit2: It seems also that after going through this for each folder, that folder (and that folder only) will correct itself making browsing instant. So for example in the video it froze on District 9, but if I was to wait 5 minutes or so and try to browse District 9 again I could, but it would then freeze once I tried opening a different folder. Theoretically then this problem may work itself out if I did this for every folder with data in it, but with ~80 or so movies and a few hundred folders of music, that doesn't sound too fun. It's also computer specific, so a folder that no longer freezes on my desktop would still freeze on my HTPC.

Since this behavior is consistent between two windows devices, I suspect the problem is with the network. I am certainly no networking expert, but I would suspect the router. I would start with a reboot and then look at setup options. Do you have your unRAID set to local master (webGUI-Settings)? I was having a problem and set this option to "Yes".

I doubt its a straight network thing, because looking at the shared folders among my desktop and my HTPC works flawlessly, it is only when trying to look at the folders on the server. I did reset the router and switch, as well as set the local master option as "yes" though, but I'm still getting the problem.

Ok actually, apparently something I changed above (probably the cache thing finally running through it all) seems to have fixed the folder problem, but either caused a new problem, or at least allowed me to see the underlying problem. I can now open and access every folder, but every file within the folders is un-openable. If I try to open a picture, movie, song, whatever, I get errors in VLC/photo viewer, etc., and if I try to copy them back to my original folder, TeraCopy opens briefly but then just closes and the copy does not work.

All my shares are set to Export read/write, which I'm assuming is correct, but it's like I don't even have access to my files. Bleh.

1. You are using motherboard or an individual NIC based on Atheros chip-set - they do not always play nice with Unraid.

Disable the on-board one and use an add-on PCI/PCIe Intel or Realtek based NIC.

2. First time that I see such non-English characters in a syslog - do not know what is causing it:

I would do a memory test.  Just to be sure.  I don't like seeing those characters either.

No alternate NIC on hand but I suppose I could order one if that was the problem  :P. Running memtest now - stable through 1 pass but I can leave it going overnight if need be. Any other avenues I should be checking?

Thanks for the help guys  ;D

Run Memtest over night.  On my builds for customers I leave it run at least 24 hours.

If Memtest passes then replace the NIC card.  Atheros NICs are huge headaches with unRAID.  The drivers for them are just not up to snuff.

Memtest passed overnight. Full configuration is:

Mobo: Asus M4A78LT-M LE

CPU: AMD Sempron 140

RAM: Kingston Value 2GB DDR3 1066

PSU: Corsair Builder 500W

HDDs: 2 WD 2TB EARS (Jumpered 7/8), 1 WD 1TB EADS, 1 Samsung HD103SJ

I'll try to get a new NIC in asap and report back.

Edit: By the way if I get a NIC with drivers on CD is there an easy way to install them onto the server?

OK, your board does have the Atheros NIC and that is more than likely causing the problem.

You DO NOT need to install a driver for the NIC card that you buy, there is no way to even do so.  If you can find an Intel based NIC card that would be best.  They are sturdy and reliable and tend to work the best with unRAID.  When you install the new NIC you will need to disable the onboard one in the motherboard BIOS.

Wow - mega thanks to you all. Limited options where I'm at so walked into Best Buy and got the Netgear GA311 - it was all they had and the Hardware Configuration wiki page said this was fine so I got it to try it out. Popped it in, disabled the onboard, and everything appears to be working smoothly now.

A note just in case others have the same problem, when I went to //tower/log/syslog before, FF just downloaded a file with no file type - I had to add .txt to even get the output I linked before. Now when I go there it displays the normal text that I can copy/paste into a text file. Weird.

Anyways, again thanks for the help. Much appreciated!  ;D
