how to tell if Flash drive is going bad?

Yesterday, I rebooted my Unraid server for the first time in 6 months and it failed to boot.  The error says:

VFS: Cannot open root device "(null)" or unknown-block(0,0): error -6
Please append a correct "root" boot option, here are the available partitions:
0800     15163392 ada
  driver : sd
  0801           15163392   sda1   5867d303-01

Kernel panic - not syncing: VFS: Unable to mount roote fs on unknown-block(0,0)
Hardware name : ECS 1885CN-A2/A885CM-A2, BIOS  080015  08/11/201

I then took the Flash drive and copied a backup of the flash onto it.  It then rebooted successfully, so I assume that one or more files on the flash had somehow been corrupted.  The problem is that this happened before on my previous flash drive so I replaced it with this new one just over a year ago.  I bought one of the recommended Patriot flash drives.  The question is: is this flash drive going bad (after only a year) or is something in the OS corrupting the files on the drive or is something else wrong (like maybe bad USB controller?).  Any suggestions would be very welcome.

Thanks.

Make sure you are plugged into a USB2 port.
