stepmback Posted July 22, 2020 Posted July 22, 2020 (edited) My 6.8.3 server just rebooted for no apparent reason again. I was streaming a movie from the array when it did this. It locked up on me yesterday as well and had to a parity check. Prior to yesterday I had no issues. It would run for days with lots of use. I had it running for a couple weeks without issue. I suspect it is the ram I put in the server yesterday. I took out my 2x4GB ECC unbuffered 1333 ram and put in 4 new stick 8GB ECC Unbuffered 1600 ram for 32 GB. My board says it is supposed to be able to take 1600. If I have to I will change the ram back out but not sure if this is the issue. I am including diagnostics file. Any help is much appreciated. auburn-diagnostics-20200722-1335.zip Edited July 22, 2020 by stepmback Quote
testdasi Posted July 23, 2020 Posted July 23, 2020 You can run RAM at lower clock without needing to swap out the old set so maybe try that before attempting to use the old sticks. You can also run memtest but given it's ECC RAM, it can be unstable yet yields no error. Quote

See if your MB is 'picky' about RAM. Check to see if they have an approved list of recommended RAM for your MB. Some MB have problems with the address line drivers when you load up all of the memory slots. Quote
stepmback Posted July 24, 2020 Author Posted July 24, 2020 My motherboard is old and in the BIOS there is no way to change anything about the RAM.... i looked all over which was not much because there are not a lot of settings. I ended up removing the RAM and installed the old RAM and have had no problems. I think the mother board is really "picky" about which RAM I use. I got a great deal on the RAM hoping that it would help for the time being until I upgrade the hardware but looks like that is not a easy option. I did see the same RAM i currently have in the server on newegg. I could buy two 4GB sticks and put them in the server to give me 16GB total. 8GB is not much RAM. Is it worth it upgrading from 8gb to 16gb for $45..... because my CPUs are old I will only use it for Plex transcoding right now. Here is the link to the RAM: https://www.newegg.com/kingston-4gb-240-pin-ddr3-sdram/p/N82E16820139077?Description=Kingston ValueRAM 4GB 240-Pin DDR3 SDRAM ECC Unbuffered DDR3 1333 Server Memory Model KVR1333D3E9S/4G&cm_re=Kingston_ValueRAM 4GB 240-Pin DDR3 SDRAM ECC Unbuffered DDR3 1333 Server Memory Model KVR1333D3E9S/4G-_-20-139-077-_-Product&quicklink=true Quote
