No since it would be formatted while the array is running.

 

As long as nothing ever happens to the disk outside of the array parity is maintained.

No, the process given works regardless of whether you have parity.   As far as parity is concerned formatting a disk is just another write operation.   The only time you need to zero the disk is if you are intending to add or remove it from a parity protected array without invalidating parity.
