My "Kernal Panic" after update Story

Featured Replies

Soooooo I updated from unRaid 6.7 something to 6.8.3. Read something about some security issues in early versions of the OS. Anyways, I am a complete rookie, tool, monkey, moron (pick one) when comes to unRaid. Seriously.

It started out with not being able to log onto unRaid after I updated, so I went to the maintenance IP, the supermicro IPMI thing. Well, it said I needed Java, got Java, still no worky, Frak you Java! Tried putty, nope! Tried doing the telnet with my windows 10 thing, nope! WTF really.... only thing i could do was refresh the preview on the IPMI tool to see my server. Not sure why any of those things wouldn't work. Guess its not officially on the network yet or something. (Putty works fine now). No worries, I still have a monitor and keyboard.

There was something in the text about a "Kernal Panic", not sure if that is a thing. Dunno what that is, but it probably isnt good. And of course, still not booting. Tried all the boot methods, safe with GUI, safe without GUI etc etc. Nothing, starting to do a "User Panic", THAT is a thing.

So, after an hour or so of wanting to toss the machine I decided to just start over with the flash drive. What did I have to lose, its not like I know what I am doing. Can you still call the unRaid team for support...by the hour?

LUCKILY, I copied the files over from the flash drive to a laptop (seriously that was the best thing I did all week). I Went to unRaid and downloaded the USB creator tool. Used the USB creator tool on my unRaid flash drive, mainly to see if the flash drive itself was the problem. Well, it booted up. Flash drive itself isnt the problem... IT booted up? IT BOOTED UP! YESSS!!!

Wait....

......I was gonna have to reinstall all the Dockers and Plugins! From sratch. For someone like me, thats a whole weekend of google and youtube searches...........and frustration and Beer and more beer and finally a broken machine. I thought of giving the machine to the neighbors kid (just for a minute).... OK, dont panic, maybe, just maybe all thats still there.

Someone originally helped me with the installation back....uhhhh, many moons ago. With the 1st shares, initial install of various dockers/plugins and all that jazz. I did have to set up the Dockers like Plex, Sab, CP for them to work. Although, I Some how I installed community apps by myself, not sure how but I did. Isnt that part of unRaid now? Do I really have to install it again? I didnt see it on the fresh install?? I dunno for sure. Not having community apps was gonna be a huge bummer. (Maybe it was there and I just missed it) Oh well, I'll worry about that in a minute...

I started setting up the array; this hard drive here this one there. (BTW there is a disk assignment file on the old copy of the flash drive that I was thankful for, but it was last updated 2 years ago.. Was that something I created somehow? Why would it be 2 years old? I did change up the HDDs a bit around that time, although the file didnt reflect that, doesnt matter now)

Start the array, no Parity check now thank you. Shares are there. Files are all still there....... Dockers are......Dang it, not there. Damn it, I do have to install them. But I can see them right there in the appdata folder, come on man, just look, right there, unRaid, why wont you look?

Then, I started getting smart, yeah fine, maybe smart'ish, I thought of copying "some" files over from the old flash folders. After all, unraid just had to "look" over there for the dockers. Not sure what I was gonna do about the plugins yet. Well I copied the wrong files and ended up with the panic thing again. Well, back to the drawing board, unplug the flash and use disk creator.

But wait, didnt I read something, someone said.. hmmmmmm. YES, Yes i did read something johnnie.black said, on "Boot fails post 6.8 upgrade w/"kernel panic" + new USB stick not booting" that all I needed to copy over was the config file. Well sheeeeeet lets try that... IT WORKED ! SHIT FIRE, Hell yeah !

I didnt have to redo anything. Community apps and everything there. What a relief. If i still smoked I would have an "after sex cigarette".

Plex and friends is there, what a relief.

So anyways the fix for my "NO BOOT AFTER UPDATING".

1. Save files from old flash

2. use the USB creator from unRaid

3. replace new config folder with old. 4. Fire it up!

Whelp, all thats done.. back to NetFlix =P

I hope its legible, I edited the piss outa this thing to try and make it humorous.
