VPN and Windows VM

Featured Replies

I have a NordVPN account and am trying to run it in Unraid.  I know Nord doesnt allow port forwarding, so im trying to find a way around that.

I have a SuperMicro X8DT3-LN4F motherboard, which has 4 onboard gigabit nics.  One, eth0, is being used by the array.  If i have a Windows 10 VM with a second nic passed through to it (having its own dedicated local IP address), would installing NordVPN inside the VM work without affecting the rest of the array?

Thanks.

Sure, vpn inside the VM won't affect the array or the rest of unraid in any way. It won't allow port forwarding if NordVPN doesn't allow it tho, so you can't "get around" that. What exactly are you trying to accomplish?

Well, i run Plex in a docker, so i need NordVPN to be isolated from the rest of the array.  I tried the other day thinking that because the vpn is being run inside the vm it wouldnt affect the rest of the array, but apparently i was wrong.  This way, by passing through a second nic to the vm just for its use alone, the vpn "shouldnt" affect the rest of unraid...at least thats what im hoping for.

You don't even need a second nic to run a vpn in a VM and it won't affect the array at all. I still don't understand what you're trying to accomplish. What does plex have to do with NordVPN? What do you want the vpn to do?

Edit: Are you trying to run plex behind NordVPN?

No, i need to run Qbittorrent behind the VPN.  But im also running Plex in a docker.  Since NordVPN doesnt allow port forwarding, Plex wont be accessible from the outside.  So i wanted to know if i had a Windows VM, with the VPN and Qbittorrent running in it, will it affect Plex running in the docker.

No. But my advice is to run the Qbittorrentvpn docker instead of a VM. But if NordVPN don't allow port forwarding you won't be able to seed or use private trackers. So I would get another vpn provider if I were you.
