External USB 3.0 DAS with unRAID

Featured Replies

Hello,

I'm wondering if anyone is using an External USB 3.0 DAS with unRAID. I have a QNAP TR-004 I'd like to use with something like an Intel NUC or similar low-power machine running unRAID I am currently using it in the software controlled mode as a RAID 5 enclosure with it hooked to my MacPro. I'd prefer to move it to a lower powered and more energy efficient machine.

Can it be done?

Is anyone else using this device? If so, are you using the software controlled method or are you using the hardware controlled method with the DIP switches in the back as a JBOD and letting unRAID take care of the RAID configuration?

If this DAS does not work, what hardware works the best?

I am curious because there is conflicting information in the forums here.

Thank you!

USB communication is not robust enough for array disks.

External disk enclosures work ok with eSATA, as long as you have one connection per disk, no port multipliers.

The best solution is SAS, using something like an LSI 9300-8e in the computer side and either a plain SAS / SATA backplane or Intel® RAID Expander RES2SV240 for a large number of disks in the enclosure.

Both of those options are out of my price range. Thank you for your input.
