Seeking Quiet Living Room Server solution. (why reinvent the wheel!?)

Featured Replies

Hope all is well and everyone is remaining safe and healthy.

I am new member, first post requesting help building my first Unraid server.

I have read multiple requests for input/advice to review pcpicker parts lists and was unsure if it’s inappropriate to ask the question in a slightly different way.

Given the number of builds and experience of the group, I recognize I am not unique and my use case is probably fairly common. I would think a more efficient option, as I am not familiar with the various venues and locations of knowledge, is to ask you to point me towards a recent "recommended" build that would best suit my requirements.  Since this is my first build, naturally, I envision a build that is economical but has the physical capacity to scale towards additional parts and future projects.

Per the beginners hardware information sticky:

What is your budget? Approx. $1000.00 USD.

How many drives do you want your server to be able to support: 8

How much capacity do you need? I anticipate starting with 1x 8TB parity disk and 3x 4TB data (12TB), plus a cache SSD.

Is expandability important to you? Yes. Very much.

What's your long term goal? Please see my projects below.

Are you interested in running any unRAID Add Ons? Yes.

If so, which ones? Plex media server, SickBeard, and likely others (not familiar with all of them).

What do you plan to run for hard drives? Seagate IronWolf.

Do you have any spare parts laying around that you would like to apply towards your build? No.

Skill level: “rusty, to the point of being dangerous to self and others”...but that’s why there’s YouTube, Spaceinvader One, and the Unraid forum :)

Current Limitations:

I currently rent. I can neither make holes (landlord rule) nor string cable throughout the house (wife rule).

So the box will be in the living room next to the TV, cable, router, and modem.

The primary concerns will be noise level...it has to be quiet.

The size of the case doesn’t necessarily matter to me, but it will be next to the TV so again as quiet as possible would be best. Aesthetically, I would prefer a case (e.g. Node 804, Antec P101 Silence) over a rack simply because being located in the living room and the belief that cases dampen noise better than racks.

(I know. I know. I should find a way to move it into the basement or garage...but let’s assume for this challenge, it HAS to be in the living room.)

Current connectivity:

Router = NETGEAR Nighthawk R6700v3 AC1750 (1750 Mbps) [4 x 1G Ethernet; 1x 3.0 USB]

Modem = MOTOROLA 24x8 Cable Modem DOCSIS 3.0 (1000 Mbps)

Internet = Xfinity; Download 100 Mbps (anticipating upgrading to 300Mbps soon, but not sure if matters to my potential projects)

Devices = 1 desktop (linux) , 3 laptops (linux), 2 phones (android), and a Roku Ultra. (2 user household).

Budget: at or below $1000.00 USD would be preferred.

Current Plans:

These are just some anticipated Projects on the Unraid server (aka the box):

-Anticipate this being headless server.

-Plex media server. (I am not a huge movie hoarder, (I have approx. 100 videos total) but would like to use and understand plex better. (I don’t know if I need transcoding capability.)

-I have no firewall at this time, so anticipate loading pfsense/OPNsense on the box virtually, (but not sure how to do that at this time.)

-self host a static website using HUGO.

-Self host Bit Warden

-Self host NextCloud

-Use several VMs

-storage and backups for my aforementioned devices.

-I would like to create an encrypted backup solution for my family members who: live external to my residence, use MS Windows, and are not/not extremely computer savvy. Potentially each family member having a separate drive, so they can be removed and sent to them in case of a catastrophic event (but just thinking out loud at this point)

-host an internal wiki to better capture and retain the knowledge I hope to obtain from the aforementioned projects.

-Learn and play around with WireGuard.

thanks in advance for any insight, guidance, and direction!
