Parity rebuild after failed rebuild

Featured Replies

Followup to a previous question:

I had a controller problem that I mistakenly thought was a drive error.  Replaced the drive (Say Drive-A) with a new drive (Drive-B) and started a parity rebuild replacement.  Partway through the rebuild the controller flaked out again and the rebuild was errored and aborted.

I have since replaced the controller, and the Drive-B is being 'seen' and reported as mounted...  however I can't find a way to force the parity rebuild again.

Is there just something simple I'm missing?

With the array stopped I can drop down and choose between Drive-B, no device, or a USB drive that I have attached.  Nothing about replacing the original Drive-A, or completely parity rebuild or anything.

Getting ahead of the game this time and attaching the diagnostics early.  🙂

PS. In dashboard the drive (Drive-B, shown as Disk 8 ) is shown as green and off-line.  in Main it's showing as 'disabled - contents are emulated'

PPS. If it's as simple as running a "Check" from the Main menu I apologize, I'm just afraid of hitting that and starting a read only parity check that will overwrite my existing parity build.

Be careful.  You haven't lost any data yet.  (Above all, don't panic or feel you must do something...) Wait for one of the Gurus to answer your request for help.  (In fact, don't even reply to this post.  It will only bump the reply count which makes it look like you are getting some real help!)

Ok, did a bit of research and found this in the current manual:

      https://wiki.unraid.net/UnRAID_6/Storage_Management#Replacing_failed_disk.28s.29

You should be looking at this procedure:

Quote

There can be cases where it is determined that the reason a disk was disabled is due to an external factor and the disk drive appears to be fine. In such a case you need to take a slightly modified process to cause Unraid to rebuild a 'disabled' drive back onto the same drive.

If you don't exactly understand what to do, ask first.   Also do not write to that Drive-A as I would be willing to bet that all of your files are still there.  It can be your salvation...

By the way, you can find this manual by clicking on the Manual link in the bottom right hand corner of every GUI page.

Perfect.  Thank you.  Simply remove the drive, restart array, then re-add it to prompt for parity rebuild.

Was just scary doing that without reading it in (sort of) black and white.  ;)

Thanks!
