toasti
Hello unRAID community, I hear very often that a frequently spin up / spin down of a HDD is not the best and shrink the life time of it. But that is one of the advantages of unRaid. Is that still a problem of HDDs or a "problem" that can be ignored? How is your experience? Thanks! Quote Link to comment
JonathanM
Set the spin down time such that you only have 1 or 2 spin events per day. If you don't access a drive for weeks, no point in having it spun up the entire time, but don't spin down every hour just to have it spin back up again 3 hours later. Quote Link to comment

Can't confirm this - I've been using the Spindown for 10 1/2 (!) years and have never had a mechanical breakdown - my spindown on all drives is set to 15min.
