Upgrading/replacing drive in Array

Featured Replies

Heya peeps,

I've been doing lots of reading but can't seem to find a straight answer or instructions/advice on the following. I currently have 2 x 2xtb, 1x 3tb and 1 x4tb drive setup without a parity or cache drive. I've just recently setup this build and only have 4 x sata ports. That's why I haven't setup parity until I migrate to a better rig. It's mainly a Plex server which I've just moved from my QNAP (dual bay).

So my question is, I want to use an 8tb from my QNAP to replace 2x 2tbs (use the 2tbs in the qnap). Is this possible, if so how. I have a gaming rig with 6 sata ports I can use temporarily if needed. Really appreciate the assistance.

It's possibly but you need to manually copy the data and do a new config to remove the other drives from the array.

Any guides or assistance on how to manually move the files etc? Thanks

I have merged your threads. Don't post in multiple threads about the same thing, it makes it impossible to coordinate responses. If after a reasonable amount of time you feel your post hasn't gotten the attention it deserves, just "bump" the thread by making a new post in the same thread.

Honest mistake, in the morning my app still showed the submit button as if i hadn't created the post. Sorry thought i deleted it. Thanks for the assistance though. :)

Thanks for the tip. I have never used it before, but if you have any handy guides, that would be appreciated.

You can just google it, one of the first results:

How to Use Midnight Commander, a Visual File Manager

Got MC running. The drive is just about to complete PreCheck. Should I then copy "Disk 1" to the replacement drive while it's unassigned? Then power down, remove "Disk 1", power up. Then assign replacement drive the same slot "Disk 1" was using? Remembering I have no parity and don't wish to loose any data.

You can do it before or after, but to remove any current array drive you need to do a new config to reset the assignments, it won't delete any data, just make sure that after that you don't assign any data disk to the parity slot.

Even if you did have parity, I have to ask.

Do you have another copy of anything important and irreplaceable?

No, not really. It's Plex server stuff. Movies, tv etc can be redownloaded. Just prefer not to have to rebuild the server again. I have plans to purchase more drives for storage and parity once I upgrade my gaming rig. The current box it's in only has 4 sata ports and power. I was able to move my unraid to my gaming rig temporarily. I've copied disk 1 to the larger drive using MC last night. The move was plug and play, fantastic. Just not sure what to do next. Can I just shutdown and swap drives?

Do you mean just careful where I'm assigning drives so it stays in data slots, not parity? Otherwise I'll pooch myself

Any disk assigned as parity will get overwritten with parity, simple as that.

Figured as much. Appreciate all the tips and tricks fellas. I'll be swapping it out tonight. I actually have another 8tb WD red from my QNAP I could use. I guess if I use it for data drive eventually I'll need to buy an 8tb for parity.
