Windows XP GPU Passthrough

So I've been wanting to experiment with GPU passthrough for a Windows XP VM to play some older games for the system.

I have watched SpaceInvaderOne's video (and a few others) and followed the written guide on serverbuilds.net

The one change to that was that OVMF isn't a compatible BIOS type for Windows XP as it requires UEFI to boot. I stuck with SeaBIOS as I see several posts saying they have used it without issue (as well as GPU passthrough with an XP guest but I can't seem to find a definitive guide).

 

I am able to boot and install Windows XP x86 SP3 without issue and install the drivers from the virtio iso (I have tried multiple revisions; whatever unraid comes with and 1.185 downloaded directly from fedora) and I can remotely connect with RDP and VNC without issue. Once I pass through the GPU though, it immediately refuses to connect/boot. I have checked the logs but I do not see anything unusual, I just get no response when attempting to connect (tried both RDP and TeamViewer, same result). On a whim, I attempted to pass through ONLY the audio portion of the GPU and was able to do so and boot without issue (and sound worked when manually installing nvidia drivers, but did not recognize GPU component obviously). The GPU has an HDMI dummy plug installed to it as well.

I am running a b450m csm\a motherboard from Asus with a ryzen 1600AF and 64GB of 2666 MHz RAM. The GPU is the only GPU in the system and is an evga GT730 ddr3 with 1024 MB of VRAM. I have AMD virtualization on and IOMMU is enabled in my unraid server's BIOS. I have tried passing through a vbios and without a vbios but I still get the same issue. I have added vfio-pci.ids=10de:0f02,10de:0bea so my syslinux.cfg and isolated my CPU cores. What am I missing? (anything else I can upload to help, please let me know)

May be worth trying 2GB Ram as XP can be fickle with its 4GB address space as it is shared with GPU and system devices.

 

I'd also setup a dummy VM with the GPU pass through and seabios. It doesn't need any disks. When started this should initialise the GPU and give you a 'No bootable device' on the screen just like a normal PC.

 

That should give an indication of its a Windows issue or a pass through issue.
