September 26, 20205 yr Hi guys and gals I have a rather annoying problem. The fans within my unraid server are cycling from slow to fast every 5 or 6 seconds. This starts just prior to unraid booting and when going faster it is loud. Hoping someone can help? My setup is as per below, thanks! CPU: Intel® Xeon® Processor E3-1241v3 (8M Cache, 3.50 GHz) Cooler master fitted to above Motherboard: Supermicro X10SL7-F Memory: 2 x Crucial 16GB Kit (8GBx2) DDR3/DDR3L-1600MT/s (PC3-12800) DR x8 ECC UDIMM Server Memory CT2KIT102472BD160B/CT2CP102472BD160B PSU: Corsair HX850i 80 Plus Platinum 850W Power Supply Case: Fractal Design Define R5 Mid Tower Black
September 26, 20205 yr To get it out of the way, have you looked at any of the fan speed settings in your BIOS? And without looking up the board, the IPMI plugin may also be able you
September 26, 20205 yr If the BIOS is remotly like mine (same gen), there is no fan settings in BIOS. The IPMI should can help to a point though. Still not perfect since I can only control "the fans" not each fan individually. I need to look into improving this ... one day.
September 26, 20205 yr Author Thanks for the response chaps. Yeah, there are no fan settings in the bios. I've Downloaded the ipmi plugin and set the fan control to 'yes'. Fans now running at full speed (circa 1600 rpm). Any recommended settings please?
September 26, 20205 yr As far as I understand, you can only link the fan speed to one temperature sensor, I chose the drives temperature but depending of your need I think you can adapt. On the Fan Control tab you can select the drives you want to use ( I only check HDDs, not SSDs that have separate cooling ). Then set your temp thresholds and the corresponding fan speeds.
September 27, 20205 yr This usually means one (or more) of the fans is hitting the lower non recoverable threshold, check the IPMI event log with the plugin, it will tell you which one it is.
September 28, 20205 yr Author Hi guys. Log is attached. It seems that no matter what the settings, the fans will just run at full speed 😞
September 28, 20205 yr Did you check the log like I asked above? If a fan is reaching the threshold all fans will spin up, independent of settings.
September 28, 20205 yr Like expected you need to change FAN2 thresholds, you can do that with the plugin, set them to 0 / 100 / 200 for example
April 11, 20242 yr I have a similar issue, no fan settings in the bios of my mother board and when I used the IPMI plugin no controls show up.
April 11, 20242 yr I have a Gigabyte ATX DDR4 Intel LGA 1151 SATA E (6Gbit/s) (GA-Z170X-Gaming 7) Motherboard and 3 "Wathai 12038 120mm x 38mm PWM Computer PC Case Fan 12V 4pin 5300rpm High Airflow Duall Ball CFM FG DC Brushless Cooling" Fans. I've tried installing Simon Fair's IPMI Tools but I don't get the ability to control the fans. When I expand global available sensors nothing shows up. I don't know if my motherboard is too old. mediaserver-diagnostics-20240409-1644.zip
April 11, 20242 yr 10 minutes ago, flivaudais said: (GA-Z170X-Gaming 7) That won't have IPMI, so the plugin won't work.
April 11, 20242 yr Any other options to stop the fans reving up and down aside from buying a new motherbaord?
April 11, 20242 yr There's fan settings. You can run it normal, silent or full speed. You can't however use temperature controls in the BIOS to increase / decrease the speed.
April 11, 20242 yr I don't see any where to set fan settings. I'd happily run it at normal just to get it to stop revving
