September 29, 20205 yr Hello everyone, i would like to use this setup for video archive storage. 40TB or above using 6TB hard drives help me to buy right hardware. i'm mentioning hardware which is available with me 1 gigabit nework switch - Intel Core i3-2100 2gbx2 = 4GB RAM i would like to use WD GREEN SATA SSD 240GB drive for cache i have 3x6TB hard disks (need to buy another 5x6TB hard disks) ----- mother board has 4 sata ports, i need another 4 or 8 sata ports for my setup. i have gone through few old discussions and unraid compatibility list i am unable to chose good adapter to expand sata ports . please recommend me a ideal one for my setup Pci-e PCI Express Controller Card IDE SATA eSATA Internal External RAID Adapter https://www.amazon.in/Technotech-Express-Controller-Internal-External/dp/B07873ZPYS/ref=sr_1_3?dchild=1&keywords=pci+to+sata&qid=1601376230&sr=8-3 pci express to 4 usb 3.0 ports https://www.amazon.in/InfiZoneTM-PCI-USB-3-0-Connector/dp/B084KRSH44/ref=sr_1_12?dchild=1&keywords=pci+to+sata&qid=1601376230&sr=8-12 pci-e express to 4 sata ports https://www.amazon.in/Docooler-Expansion-Adapter-Express-Controller/dp/B07MMBK3ZJ/ref=sr_1_15?dchild=1&keywords=pci+to+sata&qid=1601376230&sr=8-15 instead of pci to sata shall i buy PCI to USB 3.0 card ?? i want to do this because i need not to buy additional power supply unit . wd my drive comes with its own power adapter .. i want to power it using power adapter connect it over usb drive if unraid doesn't take usb drives while making pool drive .. recommend me a power supply unit too how can i add a gigabit Ethernet port if i use PCI slot for extra sata ? September 29, 20205 yr USB is not a reliable permanent connection which is required for parity array or cache pool. Usually you power drives from the same power supply as the motherboard. You might want more RAM if you want to try docker or VM.
September 29, 20205 yr Author i am coming from WD my cloud nas .. i do not need more features. can i use UNraid like wd my cloud nas .. or do i need to put more efforts to maintain unraid ? 4gb ram good enough for this build ? i'm not interested in docker or vm

September 29, 20205 yr Not enough information in that Amazon listing to decide whether to recommend or not. You could try it.
September 29, 20205 yr There is a very high chance that controller is marvell chipset, so not recommended. I don't know of any 4 port controllers that will work well. Your options are asmedia based 2 port, or JMB585 based 5 port cards, or LSI based 8 port cards. There are some asmedia 4 port cards, but they use port multipliers, so also not recommended. This should work. https://www.amazon.in/CREST-Internal-Non-Raid-Controller-Bracket/dp/B07ST9CPND/ref=sr_1_2?dchild=1&keywords=JMB585&qid=1601386545&sr=8-2

September 30, 20205 yr Author ok, i would like to limit my requirement to 24TB (16tb or above) can i use on board 4sata ports and expect 100MBPS speed with 4gb ram ? Edited September 30, 20205 yr by Hari.B 16tb or above
September 30, 20205 yr Each disk is independent so read will be at the speed of the disk containing the file. Write speed somewhat slower due to parity updates. Nothing about this changes regardless of how much storage you have or how much RAM. Basic NAS functionality should be fine with only 4GB RAM.
October 1, 20205 yr Author 4x6TB = 24TB with 6tb parity .. how much write speed i can expect over FTP .. gigabit network connection Edited October 1, 20205 yr by Hari.B
