MPT2SAS Driver

Featured Replies

Is support for the MPT2SAS kernel module planned? This would allow the use of some popular newer SAS controllers based on LSI's SAS2008 chipset.

I too would like for this kernel module to be included in the next unRAID 5.0 beta series.

+1 from my side for the real raid-controller based on the same chip, driver "megaraid_sas" to be included as well.

Reason: These controllers flag disks in a non-raid config as JBOD.

              It appears that these cannot be flashed to IT-mode and have to stay RAID but the entry level ones are

              getting good deals nowadays and I see a good opportunity for unRAID to "go with the times and stay fresh"

The latest driver from LSI is v4.37 (dec. 17th) . They work well and stable with JBOD drives now

and building it from source in a system with dkms is like 1,2,3,finish.

...not entirely sure if the driver works with smartctl (see my post here)

I volunteer to test, since i have some of them at reach.

Yes, that driver is included with 5.0-beta3.

Plan is to release 4.7-rc1 today or tomorrow along with 5.0-beta3.

If no issues reported over the weekend with 4.7-rc1 then 4.7 final will be released early next week and all focus shifts to 5.0-beta4.

So it's safe to say 5.0 beta 3 will be out this week (24th-28th)? I've got a box with a card that requires that driver and I'd love to finally get it up and running.

would this card work then on 5b3 ?

TYAN P3208SR LSI 1068E

i can buy this card relatively cheap in Thailand ... since i didn't find a supermicro yet here :(

Predictions of this type are dangerous ;).  As a professional developer for many years, you never know if it will take minutes, hours, or days to address a bug that you find in testing.  Tom had hoped to get it out this past weekend, but he obviously hit a (hopefully small) snag.  Be a little patient and let Tom get through his testing cycles.  You don't want him to rush that for the sake of making a date - believe me!

Ahem....

Any update on adding MPT2SAS Driver? Can seem to find if that was one of the additions for 5.0 6a? Many thanks.

The MPT2SAS driver is included in unRAID 5.0b6a. From the kernel configuration file (/usr/src/linux/.config):

CONFIG_SCSI_MPT2SAS=m
CONFIG_SCSI_MPT2SAS_MAX_SGE=128

Hey guys, I have a SuperMicro X8SI6-F on order, I selected this board because it already has the LSI SAS 2008 controller built in. It is easily flashed to IT FW, which is one of the first steps I was planning to do.

Since the MPT2SAS driver was added by LIME to 5.0 Beta6a, has anyone tried a LSI SAS2008 card (or X8SI6-F which has it integrated) with unRaid? If so did everything work? Temps, spindowns, spinups, smart, etc...

I have an opportunity to cancel the order, but am getting a bit fustrated with putting a large (24 disk) system together without using the Supermicro cards. My understanding is the 6 on board SATA ports are fully supported and hoping the same goes for the SAS 2008 controller on this board.

This leaves me with the IBM BR10i I already picked up which has the LSI 1068E chipset already and had flashed to latest IT firmware, but from reading the forum this card does not support spindowns at minumum. Shame. But I could live with knowing that the 8 drives on this card would not spin down, I should be able to set a spindown group in unRaid and set it to never right???

I spoke to supermicro tech support, they stated ALL the SAS/SATA controller support spindowns but the HD have to as well, something to due with Power management and L0 support, like when the drive wakes up its the controller times out by the time the HD wakes and flags it as a failed drive so even thought it finally came up (10-20 sec?) the controller already flag it as failed...

Ultimate goal was to make this system an ESXi 4.1 box with unRAID running in a VM and PASSThrought all these cards to the unRAID VM.

Has anyone tried to run a 1068E (like a Br10i) and SAS2008 together on one motherboard, wondering if they would play nice???

I reached out to SK and he has not tried the SAS 2008 with his mod.
