opentoe
I'm looking to grab a nice Corsair. Having trouble picking out a model. Does it make much difference if it is modular or not? I know it might make it easier if it is, but I guess it's not that important really. If you have any suggestions or point me in the right direction on where to get a good deal on one let me know. I'm kind of in the area of 650, 750. Quote Link to comment
Loch
Newegg has been running constant deals on these since December. I got a CX430 from them for a steal a little over a month ago. Great PSU. Looks like the 650TX is $80 and the 750TX is $100 + shipping. Google may help you get cheaper. Quote Link to comment
marcosv
For my unRAID server, I went with a Corsair CX600. The single 12V rail should be sufficient to handle the inrush current of 12 drives. NewEgg sells them for $65 before a $20 MIR and with free shipping. I honestly never bothered spending the extra bucks for modular power supplies. They usually don't make the auxilary motherboard power connectors modular and I find that I plug in most of the cables in anyway because of the number/type of connectors I needed to use were spread out on multiple cables. I just use zip ties to bundle up the excess cable and stuff them in an used drive bay. For main systems, I have been using PC Power & Cooling Silencer 750s. But, now I'm looking at a Seasonic 650W based on this review. http://www.hardwaresecrets.com/article/Seasonic-X-Series-650-W-Power-Supply-Review/837 The review was from 2009 and was for the X-Series Gold 650W. It look likes the current model is the Gold 650W. http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16817151088 OTOH, the Corsair TX750 sells for less and also got a great review: http://www.hardwaresecrets.com/article/Corsair-TX750W-Power-Supply-Review/505/1 Quote Link to comment
opentoe
I ended up with going for the Corsair 650XT for $89 free shipping. I constantly read good things about it and the warranty is excellent. I think Seasonic makes power supplies for Corsair, don't they? That Seasonic model is nice, I do like the modular cables. I think power supply manufactures aren't going modular just to keep cost down. Found out Corsair gets their power supplies from Seasonic and CWT Channel Well. Quote Link to comment
Heretic
you might want to take a look at the new x series from seasonic x560 and x 660 the 560 has 46A on the v12+ and the 660 54A http://www.seasonicusa.com/NEW_X-series_560-660-760-850.htm reviews http://www.hardocp.com/article/2010/11/08/seasonic_xseries_x560_power_supply_review/ http://www.jonnyguru.com/modules.php?name=NDReviews&op=Story&reid=202 newegg http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16817151098&Tpk=seasoniv%20560 the x660 is at € 124,30 only € 5 more as the x560 here so I'm considering it for future proofing an unraid upcoming build Quote Link to comment
opentoe
Here is the new X series 660 from NewEgg. It is just like a Corsair 650TX but with a modular design. Yes, it is more expensive but i'm hoping it will last a long time. I guess I'll just return my Corair soon as I get it, or build another server! http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16817151088 I can't tell though if the X series is a single rail or not. ??. PhilH
The Corsair 650TX is a great PS. I would keep it if I was you. Plus you bought it at a decent price. Corsair does stand behind their PS's. I have had several Corsair supplies replaced under warranty 3 & 4 years down the road. No questions asked. The pictures on the Egg show the X series supply has a single 12 volt rail rated at 54 amps. Heretic
your link seems to be the x650 not the x660 I can't tell though if the X series is a single rail or not. ??. acording to the tech specs in this link here also the table on this page shows only 1 rail for the x560 which wont be different from the x660 in that aspect. tarataqa
Don't do like I did and over-buy for your power supply. Get a Kill-a-Watt http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16882715001&cm_re=kill_watt-_-82-715-001-_-Product and determine how much peak power you REALLY need. I bought the Corsair 650TX and barely use it's horse power on my 15 drive UnRaid system.(non-gaming-PC of course). Use NewEgg's Advanced Search feature: under "Energy-Efficient", pick "80-plus cert" then under "+12V Rails" pick "Single" Any of those should work great. Unless you're made of cash, don't spend over $60 for a PS. IMO, adding Modular would be a nice touch, but I care more about a single rail and low cost than pretty case design. Quote Link to comment

It is one of my flaws, over buying when I don't need to. I plan on having 10-12 drives total in my system and the I believe any 600-650 watt power supply would be fine that is 80-plus certified. I guess I'm just hooked on having a modular design. This is the first computer I've built from scratch in a few years and I want it to be just right, including satisfying my OCD. Kaygee
Assuming you are using green drives. 10-12 drives means 20a min 12V rail. Cx430 should be fine and dandy (28a). If you must have modular Silverstone strider 500 is about as cheap as they get (@ twice the price of the Corsair). You need decent 12v supply for startup only. During normal usage should see between 40w-100W. 80+ CPU rating starts at 20% load so you want to keep your overall wattage down whilst still keeping the 12v rail capable of handling startup conditions. Specifying a 1000W PSU on a typical 50W system will waste your money, not only on purchase costs but also on running costs. Quote Link to comment
opentoe
I will be using all higher end drives. I have 5 WD Black 1TB drives in the system now running at 100W with all drives up and running. Adding more drives and increasing the size to 2TB I'll want something more than 430. I ordered a Corsair 650TX and also a Seasonic X series 660W. I'll choose which one I like the best and return the one I do not want. I do like the fact at least with the Seasonic during normal operation the fan won't even be on. Quote Link to comment
