unRAID Build Project (Europe)

Featured Replies

Hi,

I'm looking into building my own NAS with unRAID.

Problem is that I live in Europe (Austria) and therefore can't order from Newegg and I don't know any other cheap retailer. So I'll go with Amazon.de

What I would fancy so far after research on the Wiki and various forums:

- HDDs: Western Digital WD20EARS Caviar Green 2TB (8.9 cm, 5400rpm, 8.9ms, 64MB Cache, SATA) - EUR 86 / piece

- Case: Xigmatek ATX Midi oN Asgard - EUR 36

- MOBO: BIOSTAR TA785G3HD - EUR 75

- CPU: AMD SDX140HBGQBOX CPU AMD AM3 Sempron 140 - EUR 36

- RAM: Kingston ValueRAM KVR1333D3N9K2/4G PC3-1333 Arbeitspeicher 4 GB (Non-ECC, 1333 MHz, CL9, 240-polig, 2 x 2 GB) DDR3-SDRAM Kit - EUR 41

- PSU: Corsair CX PSU 430W - EUR 39

- USB-Stick: Lexar JumpDrive Firefly 4GB - EUR 12

= EUR 239 (HW) + EUR 344 (4 HDDs) = EUR 583

Any pieces missing? (SATA power/data cables, fan,... ?) Anything too good / too bad?

Money is not the real issue but I don't want to spend more than necessary.

I also want to use a few plugins like a torrent client etc. At the moment I want to use it with 4 HDDs but of course I want to have the option to add more drives later.

Help / comments appreciated.

Thx :)

EDIT: Changed CPU from AMD ADX250OCGMBOX CPU AMD AM3 Athlon II X2 250 Box (2x 3,0 GHz)

you can check sites like http://geizhals.at/ for cheap retailers. but amazon often has good prices.

build looks good, as far as i can tell.

btw. your links aren't working

Thx, I know about Geizhals - will check it if the build gets approved but usually other retailers are not really cheaper than Amazon.

I also fixed the links, thx!

...just because you are planning to use an identical drive model for all your slots,

you should - maybe - not source your drives from the same source at once

in order to make sure they are not from the same batch.

Looks like a nice build, go for it!

As for the drives, I would at very least recommend running each one through at least 2 passes of preclear before trusting them with any data.  You can preclear all 4 simultaneously.

The motherboard will likely come with just 2 SATA cables, so you may need 2 more.

For just 4 drives cooling shouldn't be an issue, but eventually you may need to add some more fans as you add more drives.

Check out www.alternate.de.

I mostly check the Belgian store and the prices are pretty good most of the time.

They ship to Austria.

For torrent client you want a fast HDD preferably out of the array (otherwise two HDDs (target and partity) spun up all the time). Otherwise looks like a good build.
