5950x or 10980xe

Recommended Posts

Hello everyone.

Before I start, my apologies for the bad English.

I'm looking for an upgrade, I'm looking to use 2 GPU's, both for use in VMs.

I've put together two options;

AMD:

Ryzen 9 5950x (when it releases)

Gigabyte x570 Aorus Master

64 GB (2 dimms) G.Skill 3600Mhz C16

Intel:

Core i9 10980xe

Gigabyte x299x Aorus Master

64 GB (4 dimms) G.Skill 3600Mhz C16

Same on both:

2x RX 580 (one for each VM(i already have both cards))

2x Samsung 970 evo 1TB (one for each VM)

NH-D15

Corsair 1200W PSU(that i already have)

Define 7 XL

3x NF A14 PWM case fans

And then I run 10 drives, a mix of 8, 10 and 12 TB drives.

The intel system is about 60 Euros more with local pricing.

Are these decent configurations? Would you recommend something else? Any suggestions?

don't know much about those processors relative performance but I can still make a few remarks:

  1. forget 3600MHz RAM, the intel is only rated for 2933 and the amd for 3200
  2. the intel provides way more PCIE lanes than the amd part 48 vs 20, this means that you can actually have 2x PCIEx16 in the intel (and leaves you room for expansion like an HBA card), not on the amd

This certainly does not cover every thing for you to make your choice but should be considered.

Quick look at the plateforms and MBs, the x299 provides 5GBE/1GBE vs 2.5/1 on the x570. As well as more M.2 and SATA ports.

All things been close (in price apparently, for the speed I don't know), the Intel looks more interesting.

(I swear I am not an intel fanboy :D ; would love for amd to be more competitive on this segment as well, but Threadripper is pretty pricy :( )

Let's see what the guys that do use VMs think (I don't).
