4.6 server crashing to black screen after adding supermicro 8 port card

Featured Replies

I have been running a server for about 14 months. It has been real stable. It had 5 data drives.

I recently added a supermicro 8 port pcie sas card. The system is very fast as parity checks are 105 M Bytes or so to start.

I have 3drives on the supermicro card and 5 on the motherboard. I added anouther data drive and cache drive recently.

The system will run about 1 day before crashing to a debug screen. Since the system log is in memory I dont how to save it.

I am thought about moving the disks to the remaining motherboard ports but I now have 7 disks.

The other 2 controllers that are on the motherboard are very slow and have many ata errors when using them.

Thanks

John

The crash has happened 2 times now. It has been running since Saturday now without doing.

I was watching SageTV all day (being lazy) and it was fine. The parity check ran at about 60 meg per sec

even with use. If there is a next crash I will get the syslog before restarting if i can.

Whats weird is this same box has been running for  over a year and has been 100% stable.

It crashed a second time when I was at work. I was unable to connect to ot with telnet or putty to get the system log.

I removed a pcie 1 esata card from the first slot and moved the supermicro 8 port there. So far it is working today.

PS on a different note dont write on drives and expect Newegg to warrenty them. They call it Graffiti I call it label them disk 1 ... diskx who knows how many.

Any ideas now if is crashes again?

Start with a memory check, preferably overnight.
