Hello everyone. I'd like to prepare for a USB-death scenario (it is quite old) and hence perform backups of the USB through "Main->Flash->Flash Backup" whenever doing any changes in the UNRAID web interface whatsoever - so that the configuration is always the same on the backup and the actual machine. Now - in case my USB should die...

Here using the "Local Zip" functionality of the Unraid USB Flash Creator for restoring the configuration is explained.

Basically they describe it as easy as creating a USB from the ZIP and plugging it in - done.

 

What I was wondering about is that many (older) guides describe it as absolutely crucial to delete the super.dat from backups. Looking inside the flash backups created through the web interface there always is a super.dat file though and the Wiki does not seem to mention it either. Is removing the super.dat only necessary for older backups where the array configuration might have changed or does this also apply to backups you did a minute before and I would need to remove this file from the ZIPs created through the web interface?

 

What I want to know is whether I can just use the (up-to-date) ZIPs in combination with the USB Flash Creator without any further modifications in order to boot the UNRAID into exactly the same configuration (including array/disk & docker configuration) as with the previous (dead) USB stick?

 

What's the deal with the super.dat then?
