Drive only accessible via USB

Featured Replies

I shucked 2x WD 12TB drives to install to my unRAID server. Precleared both over USB while still in their external enclosures, then shucked and installed. As usual, the process went smoothly for the first one. However the second one won't appear in the array no matter what, and will instead only show up if plugged to an external USB enclosure.

Maybe the most straightforward guess is that I've ran into the 3.3v pin issue. However (a) I've never had this issue before in any of the 6 shucked drives that I have installed before this one and (b) the drive that is acting up has an identical model number, firmware version, and almost identical serial number to the one that is up and running.

Any guesses as to what is going on here? Is it possible that my system is susceptible to this problem, and I just got lucky until now? Moreover, is it possible that two seemingly identical drives are actually built differently in terms of their 3.3v pin behavior?

My Kapton tape for attempting the fix is on its way but weirdly enough, even more important than getting this to work, I want to understand what is going on!!

It might be that, did you try to power it through a Molex 4pin + Sata adapter ?
