Update on my 2018 Build

Featured Replies

I did post about my build buying decisions back in 2018. I have since bought a rack, so I thought I would share a photo and current specs.

Unraid

Logic Case SC-43400-8HS

Gigabyte GA-Z87X-UD4H

Intel 4670k 3.8ghz

8GB corsair unbuffered

8 Port SilverStone ECS04

7x 6TB Seagate ST6000VN0033
1x 4TB WD

550W Seasonic Focus Gold PSU
2x 80mm back Noctua Fans for Case
2x 120mm front fan
1x 140mm front fan

Pfsense

in-Win IW-RF100

Supermicro A2SDi-4C-HLN4F

4gb 2133mhz  Unbuffered

60gb SSD

TP-LINK CAP1750 WAP

8 port netgear switch

Vero 4k for media center

To solve the heating issues in the Logic Case I had to cable tie fans to the front of the case on the dust filter. It solved the temp issue completely. Unfortunately it does not look very good, I need to buy some fan guards and maybe matching 120mm FANs would look better.

I bought a very good short throw rack from Amazon Samson brand, it was only £90 delivered.

If you have any questions let me know.

Interesting to see the entire setup including another windows media pc, vero 4k, my LG CX and the unraid nas only uses 110watts at idle.

I bought one of those plugin dust air blowers and clean the case out twice a year now and my temps are looking perfect since 6.12.6 and in winter I can even remove the front fans now if I wanted to, which looks a lot better.

Still planning on moving to a new case at some point.

2024 update

Total 66TB now. I bought the new Logic Case LC-4680-16B-WH 4U it has 16 hot swap bays and 12gbit hba support. I use two HBA cards in IT mode now and still using the same sea sonic 550w PSU and same UPS.

I removed the existing 120mm fans from the case because they were way too noisy and at full RPM they went to 4000 RPM haha. That is like a datacentre cooling. Not for me, I am looking for silent as possible. I installed 3x 1700rpm Noctua 4pin and set the fan speed to max out at about 1000rpm. They are pretty quiet, I also bought some 4mm rubber adhesive to sound proof the case. I closed up the top front and side vents and put the sound proofing on the top. This is so that the air is pulled through the drive cages from outside.  It has reduced the temps down and now I am idling at low 30s c temps which is better than my old case.

The only other main downside to the case design is the depth, it sticks out the back of my small rack 20cm, this is mainly because they give support for extended ATX and the over sized fans. I think they could cut it down by 10cm or more by changing fans and no e-atx support. Other than the case is a lot higher quality than the previous generation, in terms of sharp edges, the closing mechanism and the hot swap drive quality. Also would have been nice to have some screw holes in the back of the case for a ssd or two. The hot swap bays also don't adapt to support SSD which is a shame because they could easily do that.

150-170w on idle now.

Hi, I am also looking at this case (different use case to you), but there is a distinct lack of documentation, I'm trying to figure out how the backplane is powered - is it Molex 4 pin, if so how many are required?

I will be using a MegaRAID 9460 card with this, which uses 4x SFF-8643 Connectors, so hopefully should work!

Kind Regards, Colin

RAID cards are not recommended, see here.

Hi, I should have been more specific, I won't be using Unraid, I'll be using Hyper-V 2022. I posted here as the OP is the only person that I can find that has referenced this server case on a forum. I'm trying to establish how the backplane is powered, I suspect it is Molex 4-pin (old IDE power connector), which i'm not a fan of. Thanks.

Hi  @SimonAG

I also have the same case and pretty happy with, although the stock fans are a bit of a pita, they are 38mm depth and my noctuas are only 25. I tried putting them in the stock fan case to keep them hot swappable, but wasn't confident that they would stay in place.

Do you have any pictures of how your noctuas are mounted? I like to replace your setup in swapping out the fans.

Next time I open the case, I will take a photo. I just put them in to the housing and then used those rubber caskets to hold it in to place, it was a bit tricky putting them in but doable. Then the wire went in to the socket and they were still hot swappable.

I am not sure i bought the correct fans, they do run moderately quiet as they are in my living room after I set them at around 900rpm but I feel a different type of fan could have achieved a quieter sound but this motherboard is limited on its fan voltage configuration so I ended up using the software one but that is temperamental. In the end I get very cold temps like 30-34 and can still watch TV with it being there. The only major down side still is the size, as for my tiny rack it sticks out too much at the back. I also bought this sound dampening sticky pads from amazon and put those on the inside of the case where reasonable and that has helped a lot as well.

I think it is sata power as I remember buying a new 12v atx cable for the PSU with sata connections but I will take a photo and check next time I open.
