Minimum CPU to use with P400

Featured Replies

I'm new to the community and I'm looking to build my first UnRaid machine.

I'm no stranger to building machines or computers at all but I need some direction from the more experienced people.

I want to build a machine with the following tasks in mind:

  • File storage for the house
  • Plex media server
    • max 3 1080 streams
      • OR
    • max 2 1080, 1 4k
  • VPN server for my home VPN
  • Be relatively power efficient given its a 24/7 home server.

I have the following hardware:

  • Quadro P400
  • IBM ServeRAID-M1015

My plan is to go AMD as it leaves me open to upgrade in the future, but the initial build will be on a budget.

Motherboard: I was thinking something ATX and B450. Meaning I can drop a more powerful CPU in at some stage in the future.

The reason behind ATX is that I will have more PCIe slots. I will have 2 accounted for with the P400(x16) and the HBA(x16).

Another slot will give me the option to go 10G Ethernet (all cards seem to be larger than PCIe x1) in the future if I want, however I think this is a bit of an unreasonable expectation for a budget build.

Something like ASUS Prime B450M-A could be a more appropriate part.

CPU: Given this is a budget build, I was looking at an Athlon 3000g for now. 2 cores, 4 threads.

RAM: 8-16gb depending on what's on offer when I go to buy.

Cache: Its my understanding that this can be added at some stage in the future, however a 500gb cache for unraid would be the way I'd go.

Then for plex cache, perhaps a 250gb ssd as I believe this does not need to be too big.

The rest of the parts (Case, PSU, HDDs) are of no relevance at the moment.

So given the information above, can someone tell me if the 3000g will be enough for my needs?

Thanks in advance!
