[Plugin] Nvidia-Driver

Your plugin is broken (you'll see that on the two Deprecated lines, these should be not there and is a clear indication that something is not working correctly), please do the following:

  1. Uninstall the plugin
  2. Go to Settings -> Disk Settings -> set "Enable auto start" to "No" -> click Apply
  3. Reboot
  4. Install the Nvidia Driver plugin again (don't start the Array)
  5. Go to Settings -> Disk Settings -> set "Enable auto start" to "Yes" -> click Apply
  6. Reboot

After that everything should be back to normal.

this worked! thanks

Sounds good, thank you very much!

Just because you've upgraded, have you tried the driver on the new Unraid version is it also that "slow"?

Yes I did, I actually went from 7 to 6 and did all that. Only thing I have noticed that makes it quicker is that I install nvidia plugin and then uninstall and not reboot. Which obviously isn't a good way to run.

Since version v570.X.X anything I try to Transcode will just failover back to the CPU.

Plex was crashing when trying to Transcode.

Emby and Jellyfin failover to the CPU.

Plex is now failing over to the CPU.

If i downgrade back to v565.77 the issue goes away, all 3 dockes start working as designed again and the GPU transcode correctly.

I have two GPUs in the system, a P2000 dedicated to Tdarr and an RTX 4060 dedicated to Plex, Emby and Jellyfin.

I use Tdarr/P2000 to turn anything that's not H265 to that and the 4060 is used for media because of AV1 support and load balancing where Tdarr will use 100% of the GPU while others are trying to watch something.

I tried to follow the information at; but it didn't help and I got the same issues.

I don't know what else to try, I even tried removing "--runtime=nvidia" from the Plex docker and re-added it but it didn't do anything either.

Here's my logs of where things were messed up, I have since reverted the driver and rebooted to be back up and running.

EDIT: Unraid 7.1 Beta 1, did it on 7.0.0 and 7.0.1 too.

I droped back to v 550 due to simlar with nvida driver. Plex wouild see the card but couldn't use it..

I would recommend dropping to v550 as well. the newer NVIDIA driver for linmux is staring to drop support for older cards.

The crazy thing is.... I was only testing the RTX 4060, the P2000 was never tested in these test with the newer drivers.

My fear is if I stay on an older version, will I eventually not have access to any drivers?

Where are you taking these information from? This is completely not true. Please don't spread wrong information on the forums.

Please also note that you are using a GRID card which is basically a datacenter card and not meant to be run with the consumer driver and therefore you could run into issues, it is not even listed as supported for the 550 driver version:

I have now tested the newest driver 570.133.07 and it is working just fine with Plex. You are even not on the same Unraid version as the user that you answered to.

This makes me wonder, if you are not on the same version, why was it working for the user that you answered to on the Unraid version you are currently on and why is it not working for you, could it be possibly an issue with Plex?

Have you read this here:

Sorry but I have to say that I can't reproduce this and I have to say that this issue with the Nvidia Driver on Unraid 7.1.0-beta.1 was completely my fault and I have to apologize for that. I know that I can't do/say anything to believe me but everything is back to normal now in terms of the driver.

However the drivers are now fixed and everything is back to where it was before and even where it was with Unraid 7.0.1 or Unraid 6.12.15.

I also saw that you mentioning that you had issues on Unraid 7.0.0 and 7.0.1 which is strange since the driver is still the same as on 6.12.15 and nothing changed there, not even the container runtime.

Do you still need these lines in your go file, what are you doing with Docker here:

#!/bin/bash
# Start the Management Utility
cp /boot/dockerupdate.php /usr/local/emhttp/plugins/dynamix.docker.manager/scripts/dockerupdate.php
chmod +x /usr/local/emhttp/plugins/dynamix.docker.manager/scripts/dockerupdate.php
/usr/local/sbin/emhttp
rmmod acpi_power_meter

echo y > /sys/kernel/mm/lru_gen/enabled

Please remove all modifications since I can't guarantee that these are not the cause of the issue.

However I see both of your cards and they are ready to be used in containers.

Are you able to boot into UEFI mode and see if that works, nowadays legacy causes some times issues on some Servers where it was the opposite a few years back.

Are you not seeing the cards in Plex or does it simply fall back to CPU transcoding? How do you test transcoding, please note that the Plex Web Player and the Windows App is known to cause issues when changing the quality settings with Nvidia.

If you see the cards in Plex have you yet tried this here:

You install the plugin, then uninstall it (without rebooting) and then run your container?

I really can't tell you why that makes it quicker since you've just removing the frontend from the driver and not the driver (the frontend does nothing, even when you go to the plugin page it calls nvidia-smi once to gather the data that you see on screen), the only thing that I can imagine is that if you have set a very short interval for the refresh from GPU Statistics that this causes slowdowns, I would recommend that you set it to something like 10 seconds and not leave the Dashboard open if not really needed.

I also think that you missed my Private Message that I've sent you, however I would recommend that you investigate in what I wrote above if that makes any difference.

I'm not upset with you in any way, shape or form, you're doing us a service.

I reverted my "go" file back to stock, what was in there might have been from the original instasll from my old ProLiant. I just can't remember what it was for and might have been something for that system. (like 10 years ago)

I can't reboot the server right now because I work from home and it's running the VM that has my OPNSense Firewall on it, so would lose internet if I did that now.

I'll update you when I get off work.

If I had to make an educated guess, I more than likely did something and forgot I did it to make it go quicker. I’ve downloaded those files and will be uploading them soon, I’ll follow up soon.

Do keep in mind that you will need UEFI for newer cards alongside with other requirements like resizable bar, which is also recommended for 40 series Nvidia cards, Above 4G Decoding and so on because otherwise they will most certainly work not like they should and could lead to other funky behavior.

Sorry if my answer came over offensive this was not my intention but I think you are running a pretty old Dell Server correct?

Just because I saw it, why are you running Palworld in a LXC container, I really can't imagine that this is any faster since Proton is only a fancy name for WINE with scripts/patches for some games and they usually not working that well for dedicated servers since Proton is optimized for the Clients so to speak the Games that you run and play on a local computer.

The dedicated Docker container is now stable and also the RAM usage is under control. :D

So I did what you instructed, and I would say performance is slightly better, but not as quick as it should be. I have two NVIDIA Quadro RTX 6000 in a server and its almost the same speed as a GTX 3080 Founders. Is there anything you'd recommend to kind of show or determine if I am using every ounce of power out of these things?

For the love of god... What do you think how long they will support GPUs like that?

Have you even looked at how old these cards are?

Kepler was released 2014 and they are still supported, granted that the 700 series needs the legacy driver which doesn't work on Kernel 6.10+

Pascal was released 2016 and they are still supported.

Did you do a research on AMD what their current driver supports?

They support back to RX400 series which was released 2016!

I'm not an Nvidia fanboy at all because I even don't use a Nvidia GPU in my production server.

I'm really upset about such posts, especially if you don't even do research and then tell me to do my research, manufacturers simply can't support their products forever, just look at mobile phones how long that a manufacturer supports devices.

We are talking about tech that evolves quickly, especially nowadays with Machine Learning. Newer technology will always have newer feature sets that probably will be not fully supported by it's predecessor, time moves on and a support span from 11 years is pretty good in my book.

What especially makes me wonder, you write things like that:

This sentence is basically wrong:

Sorry I can't help there but tuning is up to the user, I just provide the driver packages themselves.

So I assume the Datacenter driver isn't much quicker than the consumer one correct? I looked at a few benchmarks that I found online and the performance differences where negligible only in some workloads they where a bit better.

So.......

Figured it out, it was my user script for the power saving.

Isn't there something I can put in the "go" file to do that?

This is the script that was running.

On mobile right now so formatting is bad

#!/bin/bash
#nvidia-smi --persistence-mode=1
nvidia-persistenced
fuser -v /dev/nvidia*

Isn't the "nvidia-persistenced" what we put in the go file?

Edit, forgot to say, looking to move the server to an AMD EPYC or newer Xeon here sometime and UEFI and Resizable Bar is a requirement for that next server.

For the Nvidia Driver, just add this after the emhttp line:

nvidia-persistenced

This will do fine.

Please don't do anything with fuser! Just put nvidia-persistenced in the go file and that should do the job, it could take a bit after the reboot so that it drops to a lower power state (usually 1 to 2 minutes) but that works just fine.

Glad that you've figured it out! :)

I'm still on my i9-10900 and couldn't be happier about it since it has enough power for my needs, even when compiling the driver packages for the 3rd party drivers.

Sorry currently I only compile the latest driver version from the open source driver which is available at the release from the Unraid version you are running.

This might change in the future but for now it is what it is, however if you are willing to upgrade to 7.1.0-beta.1 (which is stable since I run that on my production Server where I also compile and create the plugin packages for the 3rd party driver plugin) then you would be able to download this driver.

Background to that is that the plugin is in it's current state not fully able to detect the correct version if there are multiple version from the OpenSource driver in the repository available.

I hope that somehow helps, sorry for not having better news currently.

Can you please explain what you mean with that?

If you are using the card in a VM please don't install this plugin because that can crash you whole Server, as pointed out on in the first post!

This plugin is only meant for users who are planing to utilize their Nvidia GPU in Docker containers or LXC containers.

I am looking for help here. I have been trying to get Plex to transcode for a couple weeks now. I have Unraid 7.0.1 with the linuxserver Plex docker. I do have plexpass. I installed this plugin and have tried every driver available on the list. My card is GTX1060 (6 GB) and am currently on driver 550.

I am getting FFMPEG CUDA errors (see below) indicating that "system not yet initialized" and "Codecs: hardware transcoding: opening hw device failed".

If anyone can come up with anything else I could try, I'm kind of at my wits end with this. Thanks in advance!

And Plex settings:

Whenever I try to use Plex to Transcode, I just get "transcode" (no "hw"), the nvidia-smi shows zero activity, and I get a whole bunch of "FFMPEG" errors indicating that Cuda isn't started or is otherwise unavailable when I view plex logs.

Is this the first time you are trying to utilise your Nvidia GPU in a Docker container or was it working previously?

Please never runs such a container as Privileged, this is not a switch that will solve all your issues, exactly to other side is happening in your case because you are running the container in Host networking mode you basically give the container full access to your Hosts network interfaces and Privileged is always a thing that should be avoided at all cost.

Seems like it can't utilise your Nvidia GPU, please upgrade to the latest Nvidia Driver in the plugin, reboot and try to official Plex container and see if it's working with that one.

Maybe you have to install a docker mod into the Linux Server container but I'm not sure about that because I'm not familiar with their container.

Also make sure to enable Above 4G Decoding or in some cases it's named Support for Huge Address Spaces in the BIOS at the PCI submenu.

Please also double check if you don't have any additional spaces at the end of the UUID in the Docker template.

Everything seems fine from what I see in your Diagnostics.

ATTENTION: Please try forcing a transcode with a native Plex app like for iOS or Android since it a known issue that the Plex Web Player or Windows App just shows a black screen and transcoding is not working there in combination with Nvidia.

Thank you for your support and efforts @ich777! I'm going to try the things you suggested below. I might uninstall the plex, remove all the data, update the driver, then restart, then install the official app and see if that order of things helps anything. I've left comments on your comments and suggestions below. I'll report back once everything is up and running. Thanks again! Your dedication to this is inspiring.

It was never working previously. I've been using Plex on Ubuntu for years. Got a free GTX1060 and decided I'd give it a try and see if I could get it working. Had similar issues in Ubuntu and I decided to wipe everything and start over (I also had other issues, but Ubuntu hadn't been updated since 16.04, so I figured that was the majority of the problem).

OK, the only reason I moved to it is because people have said it worked for this. I am going to go back to the official container, I actually would prefer that.

There are no spaces in the UUID or any of the other variables.

I'll take a look in the BIOS again. It might not be possible then with my hardware... You may or may not have noticed in the Diagnostics file. My Motherboard is a very old server hardware from 2000, it's got DDR2 ECC memory max 8GB, AMD Opteron 1356. I've had this server for almost 15 years now and got it for free lol. Yesterday, while at my wits end, I started to concede that it might just not be possible on this hardware but figured I'd reach out here. Though, I'm actually surprised, the Operton 1356 can actually raw dog 1080P transcodes w/o hardware support.
