That's a thing you have to try, have you bound the card to VFIO? If so the plugin won't be able to see the card.

Tried it just now. GPU not bound to VFIO - Fans still spinning after rebooting unraid with nvidia plugin installed. Powered on VM, fans stop spinning. Power off the VM, fans stay stopped - which is better than before the plugin was installed.

That's weird that yours is working and mine isn't.

I also just tested that it works as expected with a plain Ubuntu 20.10 instance with hypervisor.cpuid.v0 = FALSE set. No problems at all. 

Mine was working great with linuxserver.io nvidia builds.

So it’s definitely not a hardware or esxi issue. 

I have the following setup:

  • ESXi 6.7 with the latest patches
  • UnRAID 6.9.0-rc2
  • Nvidia Quadro P400


Passing through both the nvidia card and audio device. 
Other passed through devices like sas hba, and nvme drives work perfectly. 
 

Without any flags in the vex file I can boot the UnRAID virtual machine and can see the Nvidia card

But anything else has errors like

Nvidia Driver Settings page gives me this error

If I add the hypervisor.cpuid.v0 = FALSE variable to the vmx file it freezes after bzroot and won't boot :(

Ever since upgraded to the new version of the Nvidia driver I'm getting crazy cpu spikes. Any ideas? I had zero issues with this until I just upgraded. In top I see Nvidia-smi as using the most. If I uninstall, I level back down to almost zero cpu usage. This is all while idling. Can I roll back or what can I do?

Have you installed the GPU Dashboard? Try to uninstall this plugin first.

nvidia-smi isn't active if you install the Plugin and shouldn't use any CPU power, something must use it.

To follow up on my issues, I can boot if I choose just one cpu, so it's probably not an issue with this plugin specifically.

It is more likely to be UnRAID itself.

 

If I set one cpu and also hypervisor.cpuid.v0 = FALSE in the vmx file I can get it to boot and the plugin appears to be working as expected.

@ich777- if you can think of any logs etc. to get this resolved let me know

Sorry I really want to help but I don't know much about ESXI. Eventually @StevenD can help, isn't there also a subforum here in the forums about virtualizing Unraid?

I talked to @StevenD and dropped back to UnRAID version 6.9.0-beta35 like he's running, and this issue is resolved :)

I went right from 6.8.3 to rc2 so I have to go back to that then forward to beta35.

Thank you so much for commenting and helping I really appreciate it, you saved me so much time of messing around and attempting to trouble shoot.

I have a P2000 installed, but it will not work.  Not sure where to start. The command 'nvidia-smi' just hangs at the prompt.  I don't have an error message to share.  The Nvidia-Driver plugin page is just blank, no error message.  The command 'lspci' does show the GPU.

Was the card working before or is this the first time you want to use it?

 

I also got such a problem with another user a few pages back here in this thread with a GTX960 I think, can you please give post your syslog as an attachment here or the Diagnostics from your server?

 

Also another user has got such a problem with a P2000 turns out that it was defective.

This P2000 was on this current hardware setup as a Win 10 machine, running plex and using the GPU for transcoding. Then we migrated everything to Unraid, using the same hardware. And I've never been able to transcode in this configuration.

Is this the same card that you posted about in the other thread about 1 year ago?

Was the transcoding working on Windows with Plex?

 

Can you try to run 'nvidia-smi' and wait for a really long time (about 5 to 10 minutes) and see if it outputs something?

Yes, same card same issue.  I was using the Unraid Nvidia prebaked os at that time... now I'm up to 6.9.0-beta35 and using the Nvidia Driver plugin.  No mater how long I've waited for that command it doesn't show anything.  If I run this command 'nvidia-smi -q -x' then I do get some output, but it hangs at the end of the output, and doesn't show the prompt...and again no longer how long I wait it doesn't complete.

This is really strange, since the card seems to be working, can you pull the card out and test it in another system with the proper Nvidia drivers installed? Or do you have a spare card that you can try in your server.

 

Also I saw you are using a 9th gen Intel processor? Why not use Intel QuickSync for transcoding? It should be capable transcoding many streams at once and does even save more power...

Yes, I can pull it from that system to test in another Unraid setup.  It will take a few days since the 2 servers are in 2 locations.

During that time I'll also try to get QuickSync to transcode, because it's been hammering the CPU to do both video and audio transcodes.  Would be nice to offload some of that.  

Even if I can verify that the P2000 works in the other system, it's still giving me a headache in the current setup. Might just sell it, as long as QuickSync UHD 630 can handle the load.

Search the CA App for Intel-GPU-TOP from me, it will install and activate your the quicksync capabilities of your CPU, no other steps are required, as a bonus you get the tool 'intel_gpu_top' @b3rs3rk has a development version of his GPUStatistics plugin available so that you see the current usage.

I tried this method to enable QuickSync hw transcoding, but it didn't work in Plex mapping the device /dev/dri to the container.  I installed the GPUStatistics plugin to see what it might show, and instead of showing the iGPU, it showed the P2000....which I know it didn't before, it was blank the last time I tried this plugin.

I then tried 'nvidia-smi' command, and actually got a response. I then re-setup the plex container with all the nvidia Extra parameters and Variables, and Applied to the container.  I tried to force transcoding of a 4k to 1080p and it actually worked.  I can transcode now with the P2000. 🗽

 

Here is a list of things I did incase one of them makes a difference.

  1. Removed all nvidia parameters from the plex container, Apply changes
  2. Edited /flash/config/go to include modprobe i915 && chmod -R 777 /dev/dri
  3. Rebooted unraid to apply those changes
  4. Updated the plex container to use a new Device /dev/dri:/dev/dri, Apply changes
  5. Tried to force transcode with UHD 630 QuickSync...didn't work.
  6. Installed CA App for Intel-GPU-TOP, Opened the WebUI to see intel-gpu-top running
  7. Restarted the Plex container
  8. Tried to force transcode with UHD 630 QuickSync...didn't work.
  9. Installed CA App for GPUStatistics
  10. Went to the Dashboard to view the GPU stats, and it showed the P2000 stats
  11. Edited the Plex container, removed Device /dev/dri, Added Extra Parameters, Added Variable NVIDIA_DRIVER_CAPABILITIES and NVIDIA_VISIBLE_DEVICES, Apply changes
  12. Tried to force transcode with P2000...now it works.
  13. Still puzzled.

This step isn't required when you install my plugin since it does that on boot.

This is the wrong plugin, you have to look into the thread one of the last posts says where the dev plugin is to download.

 

I think there is some other issue involved here...

But glad to hear that it's working now.
