guest user - what's that for

Featured Replies

Under 'Users' tab in web UI we can see two users created by default - root & guest.
What's the purpose of guest user? And how come it doesn't have a corresponding /home/guest/ directory?

Users in Unraid are only meant for controlling access via the network - they are not users in the traditional Linux sense.

I've never had a "guest" user listed in Users, maybe something that was added recently. In any case anybody that isn't a specific named user is a guest with guest access.

For controlling access to files over the network. Only root has access to the webUI and command line whether over the network or directly on the server.

A guest user will have full access to public shares, read-only access to secure shares, and no access to private shares. This is just like all other users except specific users can be given full access to specific secure or private shares.
