I See in your description you are using this card , would this be a simple way around the onboard card being unsuitable ?

Yes I was wondering about the SAS card being LSI 3108. 

If I decided to get this board anyway as I have opportunity at a decent price, could I just use a PCI to SATA raid card and flash it ?

Or could this 3108 be flashed ?
